One family told KETV NewsWatch 7 that they were inspired to provide an act of kindness, even in the frigid temperatures.

The organization says they had a huge turnout, which was something they didn't expect considering the weather.

"The roads were good enough from what I heard from others and I knew it was really important for us just to be able to do this," Stacia Luther, a volunteer, said.

Luther and her daughters, Emory and Finley, spent part of the morning volunteering.

"It's a way to give back to our community. In fact, my daughter Emory is the one that encouraged me to sign up and do something again," Luther said.

The work being done by the Luther family and the more than 200 volunteers at the Open Door Mission, reflects the dream of King, whose birthday is dedicated to serving others.

"To see these qualities living in our children and we just hope that our values that we have as a family can be carried on and carried out to others," Luther said.

Amy Harvey with the Open Door Mission says volunteers provide assistance with various high-impact projects around campus — a task they can't do alone.

"In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and what he stood for, people just coming to give their time and they're willing to do whatever needs to be done. It's a honey-do project for us for sure," Harvey said.

Along with the inventory tracking, volunteers also sort canned food and make lunches for those in need.

"We've got a great turnout. Less than what we normally have, but you know God provides what we need to get things done and they're rocking it this morning," Harvey said.

"I'm just so inspired to see how many other people are here today and it's really heartwarming to see everyone working together," Luther said.
