WASHINGTON, D.C. (KCTV) - The voice of the Kansas City Chiefs is no stranger to awards but on Tuesday night he was given another one.

Holthus was named Kansan of the Year at a banquet in Washington, D.C. The event is held every year by the Kansas Society.

Holthus was selected for his steadfast devotion to the state and the good example he set for all.

The Kansas State alum became the “Voice of the Chiefs” 30 years ago, making him the longest running play-by-play announcer in Chiefs history.

“It’s staying hungry, humble. Understand? They’ll do it when it’s hard. When you look at people like General Eisenhower or General Myers that were called upon to do it when it was the hardest, they needed a Kansan to pull it off,” Holthus said. “But then also to have the sense of history, to know that someone came before us and someone will come after us, and it’s our duty to live our piece of the relay race as best we can.”

Holthus joined a long list of other decorated Kansans of the Year including Mike Pompeo, Rob Riggle, Jim Colbert and Pat Roberts.
