As temperatures have set new records in the low 90s, the city of South Lake Tahoe is warning people about a possible danger in the water.
On Monday, the city said that it had posted cautionary signs at El Dorado Beach warning of potential harmful algae in the water.
The signs advise swimmers to stay away from any algae or scum they see in the water and to keep children and pets away from the water.
Algal blooms can make the water appear green, blue, brown, gold or red. Only testing can confirm whether harmful algal blooms and toxins are present in the water.
Officials said that during a visit on Monday, there were no visible signs of algae.
The signs were posted at the request of the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board, which collected samples and is expected to provide results within the next five to seven days.
