Sacramento police are still investigating why a 2-month-old baby boy stopped breathing and how he died over the weekend.
Police said they responded to a medical call just after 3:30 p.m. Saturday along W. El Camino Avenue near Truxel Road. When officers got there, they found a two-month-old boy who was unconscious and not breathing. The infant was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police told KCRA 3 that detectives interviewed the boy’s parents and other witnesses. The parents were with the baby when officers arrived, according to police. But at this point, no arrests have been made and it is unclear if any crime was committed. Police said that, at this point, are still calling this a “death investigation,” not a suspicious death or a homicide.
The investigation unfolded along the street right in front of the River Court Apartments on W. El Camino Avenue. Apartment resident Sandra Cooper said she saw the police activity, and she mentioned that detectives seemed to be conducting their investigation near a bus stop.
“I went out there to go look, and I seen all the police out there,” Cooper said.
Cooper said it was heartbreaking to learn that someone so young lost their life.
“It’s really sad, it’s terrible, it’s horrible. It’s all the above. You know, for a two-month-old baby to be killed, period,” Cooper said.
Resident Sabrina Byoune said the infant’s death made her think of her own kids.
“It brought tears to my eyes. I just can’t believe that happened,” Byoune said. “I don’t know what I would do if something happened to one of my children, and then for this to happen to this baby, it’s horrible. It’s horrible.”
Resident Shainarahae Echols added, “I’m still sad about it. I actually cried. And I don’t know these people at all. I don’t even and you know, and it just like, it touches me so hurtful how backwards certain things go, and then things could happen so quickly like that.”
Haley Skattebo was driving when she saw all the police activity on Saturday. She said police had taped off much of the street.
“They had the whole thing blocked off. At first, we didn’t know what was going on, and then we saw the crime van that was out there,” Skattebo said.
Skattebo said when she found out an infant had died, her heart sank.
“Hopefully this baby rests in peace and doesn’t struggle anymore,” Skattebo said.
As of Monday night, Sacramento police said they did not have any more information to release, but they said the investigation is still ongoing. They also said they will likely release more details once an autopsy in complete.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office told KCRA 3 that a cause of death has not been determined yet.
