National Type Approval for turn assist systems
Turn assist systems are available technical solutions that can save lifes in road transport. They warn truck or bus drivers, if pedestrians or cyclists would be endangered during a turning process of the vehicle.
The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport .is strongly committed to the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) to make turn assist systems mandatory throughout Europe.
Under the Austrian Presidency, the Federal Minister Scheuer worked to shorten the timetable for implementation.
The BMDV sets up a support program for the voluntary retrofitting of trucks and buses with a turn assist systems. It’s to avoid serious accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists. The new support program will amount up to 5 million Euro per year and is expected to last 5 years.
From 21th January 2019, applications for funding could be submitted to the Federal Logistics and Mobility Office (BALM). All turn assist systems meeting the technical criteria published in the Transport Gazette on 15th October 2018 were eligible. The demand for support was immense: Already on 25th January, the funds available in 2019 were committed by the applications received so far, a major success for the support program. Therefore, the BAG’s eService portal is currently closed for further applications under the funding program “turn assist systems”.

National Type Approval (ABE) for turn assist systems for the retrofitting of commercial vehicles and buses *
On the basis of the ‘Recommendations on technical requirements for turn assistance systems for the export and retrofitting of commercial vehicles with a maximum permissible mass >3.5 tons and buses with more than nine seats, including the driving position, for the issue of a national Type Approval for turn assist systems of 19th September 2018, the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) granted the following national Type Approval (ABE) pursuant to § 22 StVZO (only in German).
