Met Eireann may have some good news for sun lovers as summer weather may be returning "at least for a time".

While Ireland has been lucky enough to have a few gorgeous days so far this summer, June and the beginning of July have seen plenty of people leaving the house in shorts but with a 'just in case' umbrella tucked under their arm.

That's because the country has not really had an extended spell of dry and sunny conditions this summer, with washout weekends aplenty and a number of unwelcome weather warnings.

The bad news is that the coming week will begin with quite a bit of low pressure, meaning that rain and drizzle will never be too far away throughout Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The low pressure moving in from the southwest at the beginning of the week will bring rain and showers at times, with temperatures expected to be close to average in several areas but potentially below average in parts of the east and south. Leinster will see above average rainfall totals, as will some southern areas, in the early stages of the week.

From Friday, however, Met Eireann is expecting a band of high pressure to bring with it drier and sunnier conditions into next weekend so a trip to the beach may be on the cards for those who have missed the opportunity so far this summer.

A Met Eireann spokesperson said: "High pressure is currently indicated to become more dominant, at least for a time, with drier and sunnier conditions gradually extending from the west through Friday and the weekend, with temperatures near average for the time of year."
