Hungary star Barnabas Varga was a late bloomer at the highest level and only made his senior international debut in March of last year at the age of 28.

The striker, who suffered multiple fractures and dislocations to bones in his face during Monday night’s Euro 2024 clash with Scotland, was winning just his 15th cap when he was involved in a sickening second-half collision with goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

Varga, knocked out cold in the incident and stretchered off the pitch after receiving treatment for almost 10 minutes, was also late to the European club scene.

Prior to his arrival at Ferencvaros in June of last year, he played in the Austrian league and Hungarian second-tier, before top scoring with Paks in the 2022/23 campaign, when they finished fifth in the top-flight.

His reward was a move to the champions and a month after his arrival he scored his first ever European goal - in Ferencvaros’s 4-0 Europa Conference League first-leg win over Shamrock Rovers.

He also tormented the Hoops in the second-leg, teeing up Kristoffer Zachariassen for the opener in the second-leg in Tallaght, as the Hungarians won 2-0 to seal a 6-0 aggregate win.

That defeat ended Rovers’ participation in Europe, a year after they made the Europa Conference League group stages.

Meanwhile, Varga’s club doctor Gergely Panics paid a visit to the 29-year-old striker in hospital on Tuesday, where he provided an update on his condition.

“Barni suffered a concussion during the collision and lost consciousness,” Panics told Hungarian outlet Magyar Nemzet.

“By the time he reached the ambulance, he had already regained consciousness, after which he was taken to the clinic in Stuttgart, where, after the examination, a therapeutic plan was drawn up, according to which he would be operated on.

“Our striker suffered multiple facial skull fractures, several smaller and larger bones were broken in his face, and some were even dislocated.

“After the operation, he will be kept in for two days. If everything goes well, he will be released on Wednesday.”
