James McClean might just have been right with his comments about Declan Rice and England. That was the view of a number of football fans after watching another uninspiring Three Lions performance on Tuesday evening.

Gareth Southgate's side secured top place in Group C with a 0-0 draw against Slovenia. However, England supporters were furious with the team's performance, with some throwing plastic cups and booing Southgate after the full-time whistle.

The Euro 2020 runners-up have been widely criticised following an unconvincing start to a tournament they are among the favourites to win.

England bossed possession against well-drilled Slovenia but were unable to turn their dominance into a morale-boosting victory as Tuesday’s clash in Cologne ended goalless and with more groans.

However, this result coupled with the stalemate between Denmark and Serbia saw them top the pool, meaning they will face a third-placed side in the last 16 on Sunday.

McClean took aim at both Rice and England on RTE's Euro 2024 coverage last week, saying of Rice: "Don't get me wrong, I think he’s a very good footballer, but the way the English media wax lyrical about him is completely over the top.

"For me, he’s not world class. To me world-class is someone who gets in every side in the world. I don’t think he does that.

"I don't think he gets in the Man City side ahead of Rodri. I know Toni Kross is now retiring, but to me Toni Kroos is world-class. He dictates the game, Rodri dictates the game, I don't think Declan Rice does that.

"He's not someone who is going get on the half-turn and play passes forward. He is very good at what he does."

On the hype surrounding England, he added: "That's always been the English kind of hype and media around the team. It's always over the top.

"For a country that's won one World Cup and has never won the Euros, they're very expectant and very arrogant about their chances.

"Before a ball is kicked they are always plotting their route towards a final. They need to tone it down a little bit, they're always over the top."

And fans are starting to believe that the Derry man might be correct with his view on both Rice and England.

"Hate to say this but James McClean was spot on, way overrated. Odegaard carries him at Arsenal," said one.

"James McClean, as much as I dislike his punditry, was spot on," added another.

Someone else said: "James McClean was spot on about Rice. Totally bang average."

"James McClean was right. England is the most hyped team all the time and for no good reason," read another comment.
