A man has been hospitalised after suffering a serious head injury in an alleged assault at the Cheltenham Festival.

The incident, which took place on Tuesday evening on March 12th, occurred on Portland Street where a man was attacked by two people. The victim had a drink thrown in his face before being punched, causing the victim to fall to the ground unconscious.

The victim, who is a man in his 50's, was taken to Southmead Hospital with serious head injuries and is still in hospital.

A 28-year-old man from the Telford area has been arrested on suspicion of assault. He has been released on bail while enquiries continue.

Police are now appealing for witnesses following the assault. Anyone with mobile phone footage of the incident is asked to get in contact with police.

Officers are keen to speak to a man in a distinctive purple suit, who is believed to have been at the scene at the time. Anybody with information is asked to contact Gloucestershire Constabulary through the website , quoting incident 394 of 12 March.
