The Northern Ireland man did not tee it up in 2022 but will be back at the K Club in 2023.

Rory McIlroy will return to play the Irish Open in 2023

Rory McIlroy will play in the 2023 Irish Open it has been confirmed.

McIlroy won the event back in 2016 at the K Club and will return to the Kildare golf course next year.

The four-time major winner did not tee it up at Mount Juliet last summer but his return to the field will be a much welcome boost.

Speaking about his return, McIlroy said: "The Irish Open is a tournament that I grew up not just watching on TV but attending as a kid, seeing all my favourite players there over the years.

“It’s always been such a well-supported event. I’ve had my fair share of support and great memories at that tournament and going back to The K Club, it’s where I’ve had the most success and I’m obviously excited to get back there.

"The atmosphere was electric during that final round in 2016 and I’m looking forward to"

The Irish Open will take place from September 7-10 next year and will be just weeks before the Ryder Cup in Rome.

It has been a stellar year for McIlroy with the Down man winning both the FedEx Cup and Race to Dubai and also returned to top spot in the world rankings.
