TV star Karen Koster has said she “jumped” on the Six O’Clock Show “like it was a lifeline”.

And the former Xpose presenter said the sudden and shock death of her mother pushed her to quit working at Virgin Media.

Karen left the station earlier this year and has been freelancing ever since and said “I know in my heart I made the right call.”

But speaking to People and Culture magazine in the Sunday Independent, she said: “I jumped on the Six O’Clock Show like it was a lifeline.

“But when my kids finished school, I was starting work – I was coming home and putting them to bed.

“Mum died and you look at everything and go, if something happened to me now, would I be OK with the choice I’ve made? And I realised no, so I stepped back then.”

Opening up about her mother’s death, the 43-year-old Dubliner said: “We had no time to adjust.”

“My mum died suddenly two years ago. She wasn’t sick. She had a massive heart attack and we had no time to adjust. That morning I was talking to her about my daughter’s birthday party and by the afternoon she had died.

“My brain is still struggling to comprehend that she is not here anymore. She was the best. I find I’ll get more upset talking to strangers rather than to friends or family.”
