ACTOR Tom Vaughan-Lawlor revealed he feared he’d never work again after starring as Nidge in gangland drama Love/Hate.

Tom, 43, said he struggled as an up-and-coming performer in London – and that fear of being unemployed has never left him despite his success on the RTE series.

He said: “I was unemployed and had no money to pay my rent and that was pretty scary. London is a pretty unforgiving city when you’re scrabbling around for work and I was also trying to find out who the hell I was.

“I was very lucky because my family really bolstered me and gave me the courage to keep going.

“There is an innate fear of never working again that never actually goes away fully. It’s part of the territory.” The dad of two who has played Ebony Maw in Avengers: Infinity War Avengers: Endgame, said the popularity of Love/Hate didn’t prepare him for Marvel fans.

The Dubliner told the Sunday Independent: “I think it’s condescending to Marvel films to say they’re not creative and they’re not art.

“In my experience, the Marvel universe means so much to so many people.

“I’ve gone to conventions and met people who get hope in their lives from those films; they feel like they’re not alone because the X-Men, or whoever, are outsiders too.

“There’s artistry and art and then there’s show business and there’s got to be a little bit of showbusiness in arthouse films as well.”
