Ryanair has issued a warning to holidaymakers about five rules they must follow when packing for their trip. The Irish airline has shared some handy tips to help passengers avoid paying extra for carrying too much luggage.

With Ryanair, all fares include one small personal bag that can be brought on board, but it must not exceed 40x20x25cm and must fit under the seat.

If you want to add a cabin bag, it must fit in a case measuring 55x40x20cm and weigh no more than ten kilos. To make packing less of a chore, Ryanair has provided some do's and don'ts.

1. Don't take your entire shoe collection

It might be tempting to bring a pair of shoes for every outfit, but ask yourself, 'do I really need them?'.

Ryanair suggests limiting yourself to three pairs of shoes, and wearing the heaviest pair at the airport.

2. Pack shoes first

By placing your shoes in your suitcase first, you can line each side. You can also save space by filling your shoes with socks, as well as small items like gadgets, plugs, or jewellery.

3. Avoid getting marks on your clothes with a shower cap

No one wants their clothes ruined by the time you've unpacked on holiday. Ryanair advises placing our shoes inside a cloth or in a plastic bag before packing them. The airline even suggests picking up a free hotel shower cap to protect items of clothing.

4. Split your luggage

In the event you happen to lose one of your suitcases on the way to your destination, split your items between two pieces of luggage, especially if you're travelling in a couple, so you at least have some clothes and items.

5. Take your time packing your backpack

It's a given that you'll be taking a rucksack or over the shoulder bag on the plane, so Ryanair recommends planning ahead. Place heavy items in the middle of your rucksack, or as close to your back as possible.

It says the 'golden rule' is - rolling your clothes rather than folding. This can give you more space, and avoids making your clothes creased.
