Passengers flying out of Dublin Airport on Tuesday are experiencing delays due to a mix of weather conditions and staff shortages.

As of Tuesday evening, 19 Ryanair flights heading out of the busy hub to various locations across Europe were delayed, with some passengers waiting up to an hour for their flight.

There are also more than 44 flights from various airlines, including Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Emirates, and British Airways, from destinations all over the continent, that have had their arrival at the airport delayed, with some flights not expected until two hours after their projected arrival time.

The delays have been caused by a mix of weather conditions and European Air Traffic Control staff shortages. Early on Tuesday morning, a status yellow weather warning for 18 counties, including Dublin, became active. Heavy rain battered Dublin throughout the day on Tuesday, with showers expected to continue into the early hours of Wednesday morning.

One of Ireland’s leading aviation journalists, Shaun’s Aviation, alerted his followers to delays earlier on Tuesday due to a RVP (Reduced Visibility Procedure) being in place, meaning that just one of the airport's three runways was in operation.

He wrote: “Over 17 aircraft are in the queue for takeoff at Dublin Airport this afternoon due to RVP (Reduced Visibility Procedure) being in place, meaning only one runway is in operation.

“ATC have put a restriction on aircraft departing, only one aircraft can push back every 230 seconds. ATC also have an Estimated taxi time of 40 minutes for departures!”

Ryanair also apologised after some delays were experienced due to European Air Traffic Control staff shortages, which have impacted all European airlines.

A spokesperson for Ryanair said: “ATC services, which have had the benefit of no French ATC strike disruption this summer, continue to underperform (despite flight volumes being five per cent behind 2019 levels) with repeated “staff shortages”.

“On Tuesday 9 July, 14 per cent of Ryanair’s first wave departures (68 of 580 aircraft) were delayed due to ATC ‘staff shortages’. These repeated flight delays due to ATC mismanagement are unacceptable.

“We apologise to our passengers for these repeated ATC flight delays which are deeply regrettable but beyond Ryanair’s control.”
