When Meghan Markle and Prince Harry shared photos from their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor‘s christening on Saturday, July 6, there was one family member noticeably missing from the picture: Meghan’s estranged father, Thomas Markle. Now, the 74-year-old has broken his silence in an interview with the Daily Mail after being publicly snubbed from yet another milestone moment in his grandson’s life.

“I have been asked if I would have liked to have gone to Britain to see my new grandson being christened,” the retired Hollywood lighting director told The Mail on Sunday. “I was an altar boy at age 12, a confirmed member of the Queen’s church at age 14, and Archie is my new grandson, so of course I would have enjoyed being there for the blessing, wishing Archie and his parents health and happiness.”

But it seems like Thomas learned of little Archie’s baptism the same way the rest of the world had: via an announcement on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Instagram page. “This morning, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was christened in the Private Chapel at Windsor Castle at an intimate service officiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby,” the couple wrote in the caption.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are so happy to share the joy of this day with members of the public who have been incredibly supportive since the birth of their son. They thank you for your kindness in welcoming their first born and celebrating this special moment,” the statement continued. “Their Royal Highnesses feel fortunate to have enjoyed this day with family and the godparents of Archie.”

Duchess Meghan, 37, and her father have been estranged ever since their falling out in the months leading up to her royal wedding with Prince Harry, 34, last May. According to the family photo taken in the Green Drawing Room at Windsor Castle, the only family member from Meghan’s side of the family that attended Archie’s christening was her mother, Doria Ragland.
