Ruby McAuliffe is a New York City-based commerce fashion editor from Southern California. Before shopping writing became her profession, friends and family would frequently run to Ruby asking for recommendations on noteworthy products, up-and-coming brands, and the best sales. She’s since taken that talent and turned it into a robust career focusing on celebrity style news, beauty recommendations, expert interviews, in-depth product reviews, and significant shopping events.
Experience
Prior to becoming the InStyle Associate Commerce Fashion Editor, Ruby shared her talents with the New York Post and Page Six as the brands’ Commerce Writer and Reporter. There, she focused on buying guides with an emphasis in beauty and fashion, while simultaneously spearheading the department’s commerce video launch. She also served as the L.A. Style Magazine Executive Editor and Suggest Managing Editor where she helped rebrand the publication into the women’s lifestyle destination it is today. Ruby’s further bylines include Shape, Teen Vogue, Her Campus, Decider, and Dressember.
Aside from professional accolades, Ruby has distinct expertise in footwear, owning over 130 pairs of shoes — a passion she blames her mother for. She is also a frequent traveler, taking 22 individual flights in 2024 alone, leading to travel-centered stories, such as reviews on anti-wrinkle pants and luxury resort-approved dresses. Ruby has been a Swiftie since 2009, as well, studying Taylor Swift’s style for well over a decade. This has resulted in a plethora of Swift-specific write-ups, such as where to buy a version of the pop star's $1,325 cool-girl sneakers for $37.
Favorite Review:
Ruby’s favorite review on InStyle focuses on the comfortable Vivaia heels. She came across the shoes before major names like Julia Roberts, Selena Gomez, and Katie Holmes ever slipped them on, giving a new label (at the time) a chance. According to the brand, she coined the term “running heels” and helped put Viviaia on the map, giving her work purpose and meaning.
Favorite Purchase:
Ruby purchased a $10 bag organizer for her Longchamp, Coach, and Kate Spade purses and has never looked back. Living in NYC, she’s always on the move, and needs to fit everything (think: laptop, books, umbrella, keys, makeup, water bottle, and more) in her purse. This organizer keeps all of her belongings safe from getting lost in the deep, dark abyss, aka the purse body.
Education
Ruby studied at Azusa Pacific University and majored in Multimedia Journalism and minored in Public Relations. There, she received a comprehensive education in both print and digital media, including editorial writing and editing, on-camera and radio hosting, video and audio production, and graphic design. She rose to the top of her class while graduating early, earning the Top Scholar Award for highest class ranking in the Communication Department. During her time at Azusa Pacific University, Ruby also served as the ZU News Copy Editor, moved into the ZU Magazine Managing Editor role, and became the newspaper’s Editor-in-Chief.
Aside from her studies, Ruby began freelancing for Teen Vogue, L.A. Style Magazine, Her Campus, and Dressember during her three and a half years at college, connecting her to the industry before officially exiting with her diploma.
