Surveillance equipment

Surveillance equipment records the activities of living individuals and includes CCTV, body-worn devices, dash-cams, doorbell cameras, ANPR, vehicle tracking devices, action cameras, audio recording devices, etc.

The term "CCTV" is used to cover any such equipment or devices.

The Commissioner does not authorise, or issue licences for, the use of CCTV.

If CCTV is installed on or in:

• Non-domestic properties;
• Commercial vehicles;
• Domestic properties if it covers an area outside the boundary For example, communal areas or public footpaths, roads etc.; OR
• Used for purposes other than “purely personal or household activities”
  
  • For example, body-worn devices used in relation to business operations

you must comply with the data protection legislation and are required to:

• Make and maintain a register entry (subject to an annual fee)
• Comply with the rights of individuals, such as access, erasure, etc.
• Provide details to the public about who you are and how you can be contacted, e.g. install signs
• Be able to demonstrate that you are complying with the data protection legislation
• Co-operate with the Commissioner‘s investigations into any complaint that may be made about the CCTV and its use
