IndyStar is tracking each killing to better understand violence in the city. This list is preliminary, and the number of homicides can change as authorities investigate each case, determining whether the slaying was criminal, justified, accidental or suicide. IndyStar has excluded cases ruled accidents, suicides, fatal overdoses or hit-and-run deaths unless they were deemed intentional. This information is compiled using data from Indianapolis police, court records and interviews with family and friends of those killed. Anyone with information that could help a homicide investigation is asked to call the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477 to remain anonymous.

Aaron George Jackson, 41, dies in shooting on East New York Street

July 22: Officers responded to a report of a person shot shortly after 9 a.m. in the 3800 block of East New York Street.

Police found Aaron George Jackson, 41, in the entryway of his residence suffering from gunshot wounds and in critical condition. Emergency medical personnel took Jackson to a hospital, where he died shortly later.

No arrests have been announced in the case.

Gabriel Pedraza, 18, dies in shooting on Nelson Avenue

July 22: Gabriel Pedraza, 18, was found with fatal gunshot wounds after officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of Nelson Avenue shortly after midnight.

Pedraza was found in a residential neighborhood on the city's south side, between Shelby Street and South State Avenue.

No arrests have been announced in the case.

Edgerrin James Michael Hoover, 20, killed in shooting on West Morris Street

July 18: Officers responded just after 5 p.m. to reports about a person shot in the 1800 block of West Morris Street near Rhodius Park.

Police found Edgerrin James Michael Hoover, 20, suffering gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel took him to a hospital, where he died shortly later.

Detectives have not taken a suspect into custody.

Anti-violence advocate Ron Gee, 39, killed in shooting on East 38th Street

July 18: About 11 a.m., police received reports about a shooting at a gas station in the 5900 block of East 38th Street.

Responding officers found Ronald G. Frieson, 39, suffering gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him deceased.

Police as of 5 p.m. said no suspect has been taken into custody.

Frieson, who went by Ron Gee, was a prominent community activist and restaurant owner.

Gavin Dasaur, 29, killed in shooting at East Thompson Road and South Emerson Avenue

July 16: Shortly before 8 p.m., officers responded to reports about a person shot at the intersection of East Thompson Road and South Emerson Avenue on the south side of the city.

Police found a man suffering gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel took him to a hospital, where he died shortly after arriving. The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the man killed as 29-year-old Gavin Dasaur.

Police said the suspected shooter was detained at the intersection and after further investigation alongside the Marion County Prosecutor's Office, they were released.

Robert Dunn, 52, dies after shooting on West Ray Street

July 15: Around 4:50 p.m. police responded to a report of a person shot in the 5700 block of West Ray Street.

Officers located Robert Dunn, 52, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, but he later died from his injuries.

No arrests have been made.

Nakyra McGee, 25, dies after shooting on Edgemere Court

July 13: Around 3:25 a.m., police responded to a report of a person shot in the 4100 block of Edgemere Court.

Officers found Nakyra McGee, 25, outside suffering from gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Around the same time, police responded to a report of a walk-in person shot at Community East Hospital. Officers found a 44-year-old man being treated for gunshot wounds. The man was in stable condition.

Officers learned both events were connected.

No other details were immediately released.

Otis Levert Keller, 36, dies after shooting on Medford Avenue

July 11: Shortly after 5 p.m., police responded to a report of a person shot in the 1200 block of Medford Avenue.

Officers found Otis Levert Keller, 36, outside suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel took Keller to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Tyreana Lanae Terrell, 21, dies after shooting on 56th Street

July 9: At 1:40 a.m., police responded to calls about a person shot in the 4700 block of West 56th Street.

Officers found Tyreana Lanae Terrell, 21, suffering gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel took her to a hospital, where she died.

Police said an altercation broke out with at least one other person before the shooting.

Detectives arrested Kobe Bond, 22, in the shooting.

Dartanian Lamonte Cole, 38, killed after shooting near pond on Faris Avenue

July 8: Shortly before 9 p.m., police responded to reports about a person shot in the 6800 block of Faris Avenue.

Officers found Dartanian Lamonte Cole, 38, suffering gunshot wounds near the pond of an apartment complex. Medics took Cole to a hospital in critical condition. He died shortly after arriving.

Police arrested 27-year-old Reggie Horton in the killing.

Aaron Shawn McClinton, 26, dies in shooting on Portage Avenue

July 8: Police responded to reports of a person shot in the 7700 block of Portage Avenue.

Responding officers found Aaron Shawn McClinton, 26, suffering gunshot wounds inside a residence. Emergency medical personnel took him in critical condition to a hospital, where he died shortly after.

Indianapolis police said detectives identified the person who pulled the trigger and after consulting with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office, released them.

Tara Capps, 36, found dead in a tote bag on Keystone Avenue

July 7: Police were called to the 1300 block of South Keystone Avenue to investigate a report about possible human remains in the woods.

Responding police found the remnants of a woman, whose death has been ruled a homicide. She was identified as Tara Capps, 36, by her mother, Virginia Summers. Summers said she and other family members were out looking for Capps when they found the tote bag with her remains.

Police identified the remains as Capps.

No additional information about the case has been released.

Heather Lynn Walters, 48, dies in shooting at July 4th party on Questend Drive South

July 4: Around 9:20 p.m. police responded to calls of a person shot at the 2800 block of Questend Drive South, after a fight broke out between two parties.

Four people were hurt in the shooting, however, one woman ultimately died from their injuries at the hospital, according to police. She was identified as Heather Lynn Walters, 48, by the Marion County Coroner's Office.

The three other men injured in the shooting are in stable condition.

Police believe one of the men at the hospital is the suspected shooter. No arrests were announced early July 5.

Leon Motley, 45, dies in shooting on North Rural Street

July 3: Police responded to a report of a person shot about 4:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of North Rural Street and found a man with gunshot wounds.

Leon Motley, 45, was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, but he later died.

Kevin Deward McGaw Jr., 24, dies in shooting on Minnesota Street

July 1: A man was found dead inside a car in the 2600 block of East Minnesota Street near Stanley Strader Park.

Officers responding to a report of a person shot found 24-year-old Kevin Deward McGaw Jr. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other details were immediately released.
