How does America's Got Talent work?

The competition is broken into two rounds: auditions and live shows. There are eight audition shows, during which each performer is trying to get three yeses from judges Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel to have the chance to advance to the five live shows this fall.

During the audition, if a performer receives more than one red X (or "no" votes) from judges, they're eliminated. Each judge can also award two golden buzzers, advancing the acts directly to the live rounds later in the season. Once everyone auditions, the judges decide on the 55 acts that will advance to the live rounds.

When do the AGT live shows start?

In each of the live rounds, 11 acts perform, but only two advance to the finals. The remaining acts will be eliminated. The final 11 acts compete for a $1 million grant prize and a Las Vegas residency. The live rounds start Aug. 13 at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.

Is Richard Goodall still on America's Got Talent?

Goodall, a school janitor from Terre Haute, wowed judges and audiences in a May episode with a stunning performance of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'." He received the golden buzzer from Klum, advancing him directly to the live shows.
