Philip A. Nicely, 82, of Indianapolis, departed this life on Friday, July 5, 2024. Philip was born February 1, 1942 in LaPorte, Indiana to the late Paul and Dorothy (Arnold) Nicely. He was a graduate of Shortridge High School where he played basketball and served as Senior Class President. Philip then earned his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. Philip earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan, where he was an editor of the Law Review and inducted into the Order of the Coif.

Philip was as an attorney for Bose McKinney & Evans for over five decades. After he retired, he taught at Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. During his early professional years, he also served with the Indiana Air National Guard. He supported his community in countless ways and was an inspirational mentor to many who knew him. His laugh was unforgettable and his love for his family was second to none.

Philip was a longtime member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. Professionally, he was a member of the Indiana Bar Association, City Club, the Lawyers Club of Indianapolis and the American College of Real Estate Lawyers.

Philip was a familiar face at Meridian Hills Country Club where he played golf regularly, and served on the board of directors. He served as board president of the Indianapolis Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and was a loyal participant and supporter of Rock Steady Boxing. In addition to his love of family and golf, Philip also loved college basketball, Bobby Knight, and was a season ticket holder at Indiana and Butler Universities.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne Lee Nicely.

Philip is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Susan (Puett) Nicely; devoted daughters, Sally (Michael) Murdock and Nancy (Brian) McFerron; grateful grandsons, Joseph, Philip, Matthew and Benjamin; several beloved nieces and nephews and a host of dear friends and colleagues.

Visitation for Philip will be from 4-7pm on Friday, July 12th at Leppert Mortuary – Nora Chapel. Funeral services will begin at 11:00am on Saturday, July 13th at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church followed by interment at Crown Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested in his name to the Indianapolis Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association or to Rock Steady Boxing.
