John Corbett Says His Acting Career Is ‘Unfulfilling’: I’m ‘Not Part of Any Creative Process’
John Corbett says he regrets getting into acting, or at least not expanding his Hollywood presence by producing or directing.
The “Sex and the City” actor, who recently reprised his iconic role for the “And Just Like That” revival series, explained during the podcast “Fly on the Wall” that he finds himself “waiting” on film sets.
“Have you ever sat in a fucking waiting room of a doctor’s office for like an hour and been like, ‘what the fuck?,'” Corbett said during the podcast, which is hosted by Dana Carvey and David Spade. “For me, that’s what making a movie is like, because I’m not part of any creative process.”
Corbett recalled first working as an extra on “Square Pegs” with Sarah Jessica Parker before both of their respective “Sex and the City” castings. Yet Corbett felt like he was regulated to rom-coms and “chasing the girl around the kitchen for 90 minutes” onscreen.
“I’ve made a lot of money, I live in a beautiful home, people come to me at every restaurant I go in, I’m a friend of the world,” Corbett said. “But as far as a fulfilling creative work life, I didn’t write one fucking line. I didn’t write one joke that made people laugh. So it’s been unfulfilling on that level.”
He added, “Look, I’m in the fourth quarter of the football game now, in life and in showbiz. It’s just a fact. So I can reveal now I picked the fucking wrong thing to do with my life.”
Corbett isn’t the only star most well-known on TV who is lamenting his career. “Supernatural” actor
Jared Padalecki told Variety that his tenure on network The CW has altered his perception of modern TV.
“I feel like The CW that I was a part of last year is not The CW that I was a part of under [former chairman and CEO] Mark Pedowitz for that entire, almost 20-year stretch,” Padalecki said. “They’re just changing the network around, where it’s not really going to be a TV network as much as it’s going to be, ‘Here’s something fun for an hour that you’ll never watch again, but hopefully you watch it. And it’s cheap!’ And I hate to say that, but I’m just being honest. I mean, fuck it. They can’t fire me again. I’m just being brutally honest. I think it felt to me like they were looking for really easy, cheap content that they could fill up time with.”
