Bill Whelan: ‘I hope my children never doubted how much I cared about them, as I was mostly on the road’

​I grew up in Limerick in the 1950s. My father and mother ran a newsagent. They were late to marriage. My dad was 50 when I was born and my mother was 40. They did have one child beforehand but he didn’t survive.
