Ireland international Scott Hogan has been included in the list of players released by Birmingham City as they count the cost of relegation to the third tier.

The Blues have released five members of the first team squad, including Hogan, and nine academy players.

Hogan (32) had a dismal season for City, scoring just twice in 29 games, though he did start just 11 times in the league, a huge turnaround from the previous campaign where he was their top scorer.

Once valued at £8m, the reported fee for his 2017 move from Brentford to Aston Villa, Hogan now faces an uncertain future at club level.

Hogan is just one of the senior Ireland internationals available on a free transfer this summer as Aaron Connolly and Cyrus Christie (Hull City), Greg Cunningham (Preston), Conor Hourihane (Derby), Alex Pearce (Wimbledon), Aiden O’Brien (Shrewsbury), Sean Maguire (Carlisle), Ciaran Clark (Stoke), Shaun Williams (Gillingham) and Cillan Sheridan (Queens Park) have all been released.

Preston remain hopeful that long-serving midfielder Alan Browne will agree new terms being offered what the club say is a record deal for Preston.

Browne (29) is out of contract and has already been linked with some of their Championship rivals, while interest from Italy in Browne – there was a bid reportedly made by Italian side Salernitana in the January window which was rejected by Preston.
