Jude Bellingham struggled to contain his emotions as his dream first season at Real Madrid ended with Champions League glory on home soil at Wembley.

Bellingham has joined an elite group of British players to have won the Champions League with a foreign club as his side claimed a 2-0 win against German rivals Borussia Dortmund.

Outplayed for much of the evening, the tournament’s most successful team earned yet another European Cup as Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Junior scored to secure a 2-0 victory.

Carlo Ancelotti had warned his Real players on the eve of the final that they would play with fear and they certainly suffered from stage fright for large parts of the game – eventually finding a way to win.

Thibaut Courtois was making his first Champions League appearance of the season having recovered from two serious knee injuries and his saves kept Madrid in the game until they struck themselves.

Dortmund’s own profligacy ended up costing them dear after a string of first-half chances were missed, including Niclas Fullkrug hitting the post.

Wembley Stadium confirmed arrests were made after the game was halted inside the opening minute as three separate pitch invaders evaded security.

When the game got back under way it was Dortmund, watched on by former boss Jurgen Klopp, who were the better side but a gritty Real performance ultimately saw them come out on top once more.

"I've always dreamed of playing in these games,” said Bellingham. “You go through life and there are so many people saying you can't do things and days like today remind you why.

“When it gets hard at times you start to wonder if it's all worth it. Nights like tonight make it all worth it.

“I was okay until I saw my Mum and Dad's faces. The nights they could have been home at seven o'clock but they are still out at eleven or twelve taking me to football.

“My little brother there who I am trying to be a role model for too. Hard to put it into words, best night of my life.”

Meanwhile, former Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho praised Carlo Ancelotti for his adaptability as the club won their 15th Champions League title.

Second-best for most of the final against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley, late goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Junior clinched victory.

“When they played against Manchester City (in the semi-final) they thought to beat them they had to change the philosophy,” Mourinho told TNT Sports.

“Ask Real Madrid fans if they were unhappy to see them change the philosophy against City. Ask Real Madrid fans if they were unhappy with the philosophy in the first half.

“He is not a social media coach, he is a proper coach. He comes from the meritocracy.

“Don’t get me wrong, Edin (Terzic, Dortmund coach) did a great job. Football is not about ifs but if they score a goal in the first half I am pretty sure they win.

“I feel sorry for them because they are a very good team.”
