Ulster are bringing strong-running South African winger Werner Kok to Ravenhill next season on a two-year deal with the province.

The 31-year-old Sharks player has represented South Africa at Sevens where he has previously won a gold medal in 2014’s Commonwealth Games and a bronze at the Rio Olympics two years later.

The Blitzboks star was also named World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year in 2015.

With most of the current focus on the number of players potentially departing Ulster at season’s end, Ulster have pitched in with an addition to their squad and though the Sharks are at the foot of the URC table with a miserable one win in 11 matches, Kok still looks a useful addition and can play more than one position across the backline.

He has been based in the northern hemisphere before and had a short spell at Toulouse in season 2019-20.

Reacting to this summer’s move to Ulster, Kok said: “I want to thank Ulster for this incredible opportunity.

“I hope to make you proud on and off the field. Moving from South Africa will be a big change for me and my wife but it’s a challenge that we are very excited for.”

Bryn Cunningham, Head of Rugby Operations and Recruitment added: “Werner will add something different to our group with his vast experience across the Sevens game and 15s, where he has showcased his own exciting brand of rugby.

“I think he will fit in well with the talented backs in the squad, as we look to develop our options in the backfield.”
