Superb second for younger ace Allen

Showjumper Harry Allen, 20-year-old younger brother of Irish team member Bertram Allen, produced a spectacular runner-up finish behind world no 1 Steve Guerdat in the 4-Star Grand Prix at Gorla Minore in Italy yesterday.

Riding the 10-year-old mare Guinness, the German-based Wexford rider was just 0.24 secs off the winning time set by the Swiss superstar. On Saturday, 19-year-old Jack Ryan from Kilkenny won the U25 Two-Phase class with Sjelle.

At the Kentucky Spring Show in Lexington, USA, Daniel Coyle and Legacy topped the Hagyard 3-Star Grand Prix with the quickest of just two double-clears.

The pair also won Thursday’s Spring Classic while Cork’s Shane Sweetnam won the opening Welcome Stakes.

At Sentower Park in Belgium, Darragh Kenny won Saturday’s 1.45m Speed event partnering Crisp.

At the CDI 3-Star at Wellington in Somerset prospective Irish Olympians battled with the best of the British. Kildare’s Heike Holstein scored a personal best of 70.596 with Sambuca to finish seventh in the Thursday’s Grand Prix Special ahead of Meath’s Kate Dwyer and Snowdon Faberge in eighth and Alex Baker and Dutchman in tenth.

In her international Freestyle debut, Carolyn Mellor and Gouvenor M finished tenth ahead of Beldinda Brereton and Captain Negro C.
