Ireland’s Eddie Dunbar has been ruled out of the Giro d’Italia after he was involved in a crash with a number of other riders with just over 60km to go to the finish of the second stage.

Dunbar remained by the roadside for a short period trying to gather himself after the incident on a roundabout before getting back on the bike.

But in a social media post, it has been confirmed that the Irishman has withdrawn from the race.

"Unfortunately following a crash on stage two of Giro d'Italia, Eddie Dunbar will not start today's third stage," the team wrote.

"The Irishman was able to finish the stage, but after further examinations by the team doctor, the decision has been made to withdraw the 27-year old from the race due to a sustained injury under his right kneecap and bodily abrasions.”
