At the Stadio Olimpico in Rome last night, four Irish athletes came together to create a piece of athletics history, joining Sonia O’Sullivan as the only gold medallists for Ireland in the 90-year history of the European Championships. Meet the four sprinters who are now champions of Europe.

The 26-year-old is a native of Grange, Co Sligo, and found his way to athletics via soccer, joining a club in his teenage years solely to improve his speed on the pitch. But in doing so he unearthed a rare ability, and O’Donnell went on to win five national senior titles over 400m and make the Tokyo Olympics, where he helped Ireland to eighth in the mixed relay final.
