When the nerves come – and they will – Ciara Mageean knows exactly what to do. At 32, she’s old enough, wise enough, not to allow intrusive thoughts to assume command of the control tower.

So when she walks out on track at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico tomorrow, in all its intimidating grandeur, she’ll look around, take a deep breath, and remind herself of something she’s long known, but now understands better than ever.
