The Big Tech Show: Elon Musk, Jack Dorsey and X – the battle for the bird

The Big Tech Show

Adrian Weckler

What was the real story behind Musk’s takeover of Twitter? How did Jack Dorsey see the buyout? And is X still used by the masses?

Adrian was joined by technology journalist with Bloomberg and author of ‘Battle for the bird: Jack Dorsey, Elon Musk, and the $44 billion fight for Twitter’s soul,’ Kurt Wagner.

Wagner explained that before Jack Dorsey left Twitter, he began to believe that the way forward for the company was to take it private. Dorsey often referred to Musk as his, “favourite tweeter,” he was initially delighted to see Musk turn up as one of Twitter’s largest shareholders and helped get him a position on the board.

The technology journalist points out in the book that both Musk and Dorsey wanted to take Twitter private. Dorsey saw the pressures of being a publicly traded company as an obstacle to free speech and that public companies were at the whim and beckon call of advertisers.

The author was quick to mention that although Dorsey and Musk agreed on wanting a place online where people could express themselves, he said there is a lot of daylight between their opinions on other issues such as pronouns and immigration.
