Sinéad Ryan: Making cookery classes compulsory in schools – now there’s some food for thought

Once a year the nuns would allow us into their convent, beside our school. A few girls had to help the sisters prepare tea and sandwiches for ­parents of prospective new students.

It was a good job to get, not least because we got out of a couple of classes and entered the hallowed halls of the nuns’ home.
