Since February last year, we’ve become accustomed to images of Russia’s war against Ukraine. Culture is not the most obvious focus of concern, but it is a deliberate target of wars that seek to annihilate nations. For culture is where national memory and identity find expression.

It’s no accident that theatres and museums have been obliterated alongside schools and hospitals, or that valuable artworks have been ‘transported’ to Russia. It’s no accident, either, that Ukrainian libraries have been looted and destroyed
