Average warranty for electric vehicles in Ireland is eight years

The average EV battery warranty is eight years, longer than the typical two- to five-year warranty on an internal combustion engine

The average battery warranty on an EV in Ireland is eight years, according to research carried out by Skoda.

It was in response to “a lot of misinformation” about warranties on social media and subsequently in discussion with people attending the Nevo electric car show at the weekend, according to Skoda’s Raymond Leddy.

To establish the facts, he carried out a survey of competing brands and found that eight years is the average.

He said at the show it was evident one of the barriers for motorists moving to a BEV was battery warranty.

They had been reading “sensational content” online, claiming that customers are exposed to battery costs of up to €20,000 as soon as the standard vehicle warranty has expired.

Mr Leddy said: “This information is inaccurate in a number of ways.

“Left unchecked or unchallenged, these inaccuracies are quickly becoming fact.”

An internal combustion engine warranty is from two to five years, depending on manufacturer, he estimates. But EV battery warranties are averaging eight years.
