There has to be an acceptance at European level of farming as a way of life that is subsidised and protected, if it is to sustain rural populations, President Michael D Higgins has said.

“I believe that... you’re going to have to see acceptance at European level of farming as a way of life that is subsidised and protected, if you want to sustain rural populations,” he told journalists after being awarded the ‘Agricola Medal’ of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) last week.
