EU countries give final approval to major plan to better protect nature in the 27-nation bloc.

It came after Austria's environment minister, Leonore Gewessler of the Greens, defied her conservative coalition partners by pledging to cast Austria's vote in favour of adopting a European nature restoration law, tipping the balance in Brussels.
