Department quizzed over leniency to horse sector compared to cattle

Department of Agriculture officials were pressured by the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee to explain why the strict traceability system in the beef industry is not imposed on the equine sector.
The hearing came in the wake of an RTÉ documentary investigating the mistreatment of horses at Shannonside Foods abattoir in Straffan, Co Kildare.
