New Defender is a classy combination of luxury and function

On road and off road, the Defender has everything a farmer could need – but it’s hard to justify the price tag that starts at €72,680 (inc VAT)

Versatile: ‘Whether pulling a trailer on the byways of Ireland or cruising on the motorway, the big Defender is a standout performer’

Alistair Chambers

The original Landover broke cover in 1948 at the London Motor show. It was seen as a purely utilitarian vehicle for farmers and roving over land, as the name suggested.

Over the 60-odd years that versions of that original were on the market, it went through something of a change in character and function. By the end of production in 2012, its main market seemed to be city dwellers and mobile billboards for companies.
