‘I want to leave my farm to my workman. I read about two fellas marrying to avoid inheritance tax. Could this work for me?’

‘I never had children and this man has been with me a long time. He deserves the farm and I don’t want him to be hit with a big tax bill that would force him to sell part of the land. Should we get married?’

Query: I am a farmer reaching the point in my life where it is time to make a will. I never married and I have no real relationship with my nieces and nephews bar the occasional visit at Christmas, and many of them live overseas.

None of them ever helped me on the farm despite my efforts to get some of them living locally interested.
