Three topics emerged from last week’s sales. Firstly, numbers are up in some places and less in others, but generally typical for the time of year; secondly, while the trade remains strong, there are more lighter cattle coming on stream, with a share being a more difficult sell; and thirdly, where has all the grass gone?

“The essence of it is that some fellas who didn’t buy enough cattle earlier are now gauging their options because the year is already half over,” said PJ Mulvihill of Listowel.
