The State pension has been a blessing to many farm families since its introduction over three decades ago. Many couples are both getting it, which gives them a combined €28,122 a year.

Many others get a combination of the State pension and the increase for a qualified adult (IQA), which between them amounts to €23,426 where the spouse in receipt of the IQA is under 66 or €26,621 if over 66.
