Annette Smyth “got into a lot of trouble” in fifth class for her cartoon of a nun who taught cooking. “It was a bit mean, but so was the nun.” Later, as a teenager, she drew and doodled “down the back of the physics class” but “I was not ‘the person who could draw’, I was too shy for that”.

Her art teacher told her dad at a parent-teacher meeting “she’s no Michelangelo”.
