Who We Are
The Immigration Project was founded in 1995 with the goal of ensuring legal access to the Immigrant populations of downstate Illinois. Since then, The Immigration Project has been growing and changing, bringing immigration legal services to the immigrants of Central and Southern Illinois.
The Immigration Project has physical offices in Bloomington-Normal and Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. Through a combination of in-person consultation, teleconferencing, and old-fashioned circuit riding, The Immigration Project utilizes a rural-regional service model to provide affordable, accessible, and high-quality immigration legal services to the immigrants living in our 86 county service area.
What We Do

Due to the complexity of immigration law, we have found that access to quality legal services is essential to keeping families united, building strong communities, and protecting victims of crime. The Immigration Project is a nonprofit organization providing immigration legal assistance to the 100,000 immigrants residing in Central and Southern Illinois.
Attorney Consultations
on Immigration Issues
We offer individual consultations and evaluations on immigration issues with legal representatives. The majority of our staff are fluent in Spanish. We also have French-speaking volunteers. Topics include citizenship; assistance for victims of crimes, including domestic violence; family reunification; removal defense; and the recent Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Serving Downstate Illinois
in Seven Locations
We operate on a rural service model. Our immigration attorneys and immigration specialists travel to meet with clients in seven regional locations – Bloomington-Normal, Champaign-Urbana, Kankakee, Peoria, Springfield, Carbondale, and Monmouth. Without our programs, low-income immigrants in the region would struggle to obtain access to professional immigration assistance.

We are committed to helping immigrants so that they can reach their goals and have a better life for themselves and their families. We believe that immigrants are essential members of our community, and that helping all members of a community strengthens it as a whole.
Our Impact
Komi came to the United States in 2008 to pursue higher education, leaving behind a wife and daughter in Togo.
For seven years, Komi made a life here in the United States, alone, until The Immigration Project was able to help Komi get his wife and daughter to the USA.
