The Virgin Suicides (1999)
A polished mistake
The Virgin Suicides is considered an absolute cult classic especially among teenage girls and young women. All the way from the first scene you can feel how Coppola has handcrafted the film to strike in deep with female audiences. This can be seen through her poetic writing both in the sense of lines and in how the film flows.
While being targeted towards female audiences, it clearly isn't meant to be something exclusive to women. This can be seen in how the narrative is driven from the point of view of a group of teenage boys, which is definitely not the way of going for something described as feminine.
The film is a guaranteed Sofia Coppola visual experience, appealing with beautiful coloring through a bright yellow camera lens and otherwise beautiful pastel colors presented using very grounded and descriptive cinematography. The film also does a fantastic job at depicting it's emotions to the audience. It exclusively uses music in powerful and important scenes, where grave heartbreak or exciting sexual discovery are imminent. I also loved how the film darkened both in the actual visible colors and the ways it was shot for little moments as an aftermath of all the Lisbon family horror.
The film succeeds best at depicting it's intriguing characters and their emotions. The characters and their feelings and actions feel natural and relatable and their personal struggles feel as they are actual living people.
At quite a few points, the film tries to do too much especially with it's visuals, which fails and makes the film feel clustered and even a bit pretentious. Also, the plot feels extremely stretched out in the middle of the film and fails to draw you in leaving you bored for about a third of the runtime. The plot feels lacking of content which Coppola is desperately trying to salvage through the use of a totally irrelevant mystery element that feels way too forced and is only really introduced at the end.
Long story short, The Virgin Suicides is a very well crafted and good looking drama but the desperate attempt of mixing in mystery makes the end feel forced and unnecessary.
