Who murdered who — and why?
A teaser for fans’ newest Netflix binge watch just dropped, starring Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Meghann Fahy, Eve Hewson, Dakota Fanning, Ishaan Khatter, Billy Howle, and Jack Reynor.
Based on the popular 2018 beach read by Elin Hilderbrand of the same name, “The Perfect Couple” revolves around a wealthy family in Nantucket, and a wedding weekend gone very wrong.
Here’s official logline for the limited series: “Amelia Sacks is about to marry into one of the wealthiest families on Nantucket. Her disapproving future mother-in-law, famous novelist Greer Garrison Winbury, has spared no expense in planning what promises to be the premiere wedding of the season — until a body turns up on the beach. As secrets come to light, the stage is set for a real-life investigation that feels plucked from the pages of one of Greer’s novels. Suddenly, everyone is a suspect.”

As a categorical rule, I watch everything starring Zac Efron for research purposes. Of course, the last time I saw him was in The Iron Claw, a movie in a completely different ball game than the one we’re talking about today. I’ve got to admit that the 36-year-old still has the same charm that drew me to him at 10/12/13, watching him in High School Musical, and then everything else that followed. Now, of course, I’m not going to make this review all about the guy when two stunning women star alongside him, but I’ve got to admit, I feel the need to defend this man for seemingly no reason at all. A Family Affair opens with a montage of Chris Cole, the “it” guy of today. An actor known for his sci-fi action films is about to embark on the journey to make a third of...

The original title of the new romantic comedy A Family Affair was the much-edgier MotherF*&#er, and despite being very funny in terms of the basic story of an older woman who starts an affair with the younger movie-star boss of her 24-year-old daughter, it probably sets off wrong expectations for what is a smart, character-driven romcom that serves up a delicious cast with a witty script and engaging situation for all. The generic title gets more to the point as this all directly involves three people in a multi-generational coming-of-age tale for all in their search for personal happiness.
Netflix actually is using that original title in its ad line for the film, calling it “A MotherF*&#er of a Love Story,” and that says it all. Coming on the heels of Amazon’s rom-com The Idea of You — in which a fortysomething single mom (Anne Hathaway) finds unexpected...

Joey King has signed with WME for representation.
The 24-year-old actor is best known for Netflix’s “The Kissing Booth” franchise, as well as Hulu’s true-crime series “The Act.” She scored an Emmy nomination for “The Act,” in which she portrayed Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who faced years of suffering and abuse as a result of her mom’s Munchausen syndrome by proxy. (The real Gypsy Rose eventually faced jail time for the second-degree murder for the death of her mother.)
King’s other credits include Hulu’s historical drama “We Were the Lucky Ones,” David Leitch’s action-comedy “Bullet Train,” Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Crazy Stupid Love.” This summer, she will voice a character in Universal and Illumination’s “Despicable Me 4.” King is also starring in Netflix’s “A Family Affair” alongside Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman.

The year 2024 has been nerve-wracking for television fans. No shows are safe, and many reigning champs are seeing the end of their careers.
Did any of us really expect to see long-running success shows like Station 19 or Blue Bloods end?
But they are ending as networks try to tighten their production budgets. That means saying goodbye to some of our favorites to make room for the new and improved.
It can be tricky to get attached to a freshman season of any show. You can get attached to the characters, only to find out it was for naught when the season doesn't succeed.
Thankfully, that's not the case with Justin Hartley's new series, Tracker.

Wherever I go, when I tell people that I work as an editor for Gold Derby, they never fail to bring up their latest binge-fest and how obsessed they were with it. “Ripley” occupied that space for several weeks, replaced by “Baby Reindeer,” then “Fellow Travelers.” Before that, I ran into a bunch of “Lessons in Chemistry” fans, and friends who were absolutely obsessed with “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.” “Fargo: Season 5” and “True Detective: Night Country” also had, and continue to have, legions of followers. And of course, “Shogun” consumed people for a good long while.
The point is that Best Limited Series has grown the past few years into the hottest and most prestigious Emmy category, and that’s especially true in 2024 with the depletion of the Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series due to the 2023 strikes and the departure of shows like “Succession” and “Ted Lasso.

A lot of the work of making a great TV show is done in the casting. Characters with compelling, dynamic relationships are ultimately a huge part of what keeps our attention on the big or the small screen. So, given that Emmy voting has just begun, IndieWire wanted to reach out to some of television’s top casting directors to ask them to nominate one outstanding work from this past year.
Not so unlike seeing 10 great, different actors give 10 great, different interpretations of a role and then somehow having to pick just one, the casting directors who responded to us were quick to point out how many shows have made revelatory casting choices in the last year. “Baby Reindeer,” “Eric,” “Only Murders In The Building,” “Shogun,” and “What We Do in the Shadows” all received warm praise in multiple email threads about our casting directors’ choices, and luckily, most of...

In Hulus “We Were the Lucky Ones,” Joey King plays Halina, a young girl who dreams of finding romance, but the looming Second World War throws her life down another unimaginable path. Based on Georgia Hunter’s book, the series follows the true story of the Kurc family living in Poland and how the Holocaust threatened to rip the family apart.
In dressing Halina, costume designer Lisa Duncan made sure to keep outfits anchored in the period of Polish history. Florals and bright clothing give way to darker palettes as Halina battles to survive.
Here, King and Duncan reflect on bringing authenticity to Halina’s costumes and how hair, makeup and costume helped the actor transform.
What was the process of bringing Halina to life through costume?

Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are on the verge of Egot status… that is, if Emmy voters nominate their song from “Only Murders in the Building” and it winds up winning three months from now.
Pasek and Paul — already Oscar winners for “La La Land” and Tony and Grammy winners for “Dear Evan Hansen” — could finally manage that feat with the witty comic patter song “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?,” sung by Steve Martin and co-written with fellow Tony and Grammy winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman for the third season of the Hulu comedy-drama.
They are among the many prominent songwriters who have entered songs in this year’s Emmy competition. Voting began Thursday, with approximately 550 members of the Television Academy music peer group eligible to vote in seven music categories. Voting ends June 24 and the nominations will be announced July 17.

While in development for the Amazon Prime drama “Expats,” creator, writer and director Lulu Wang knew she had to pay tribute to the lives lost during the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. Having been in China at that time as a child, she remembers how scared she was when her father nearly left to join the protest which ultimately led to the death of hundreds.

After attempting to change the hierarchy of power in the DC universe as Black Adam, Dwayne Johnson has officially jumped ship to Disney.
Variety reports that Seven Bucks Productions, the film and TV content label founded by Johnson and Dany Garcia, has signed a first-look deal with The Walt Disney Company to develop films for theatrical and streaming.
Though no specific titles are mentioned, it's said that the projects will be possible vehicles for Johnson to star in, and the deal is not strictly limited to filmed content. Most interestingly, the multi-year agreement will also give Seven Bucks a chance to collaborate across all Disney divisions.

After an extensive search, Disney has found the next Moana. Newcomer Catherine Laga‘aia will star as the titular character in the remake of the 2016 hit animated film. The 17-year-old actor hails from Sydney, Australia, and joins Dwayne Johnson in the feature, reprising his role as demigod Maui.
“I’m really excited to embrace this character because Moana is one of my favorites,” said Laga‘aia in a statement. “My grandfather comes from Fa‘aala, Palauli, in Savai‘i. Laga‘aia picks up the role from Auli‘i Cravalho, who voice starred in the 2016 original and will executive produce the remake. She is said to be mentoring the younger actor in the role.

One of the franchises that have made Matt Damon’s career in Hollywood, has been the Bourne franchise, which is perhaps the most instrumental in Damon’s rise to fame. The Ocean’s 11 star had starred in a full trilogy when the actor thought that he was done with the films, only for a visit to the set of Jeremy Renner’s spin-off, to pull him right back in.

When Georgia Hunter first pitched her 2017 book, “We Were the Lucky Ones,” about her Polish ancestors’ fight for survival during the Holocaust, she was told World War II literature was a “saturated” market. This wasn’t meant to dissuade her from pushing forward with their harrowing story, but rather acknowledge that there is never a shortage of novels, films and series trying to reckon with the everlasting wounds of the war.
It was no different when Hunter and producers Thomas Kail and Erica Lipez adapted the book into Hulu’s eight-part limited series, which premiered in March.
“We knew with this kind of story in particular, you have to go beyond the logline,” Lipez tells Variety. “It was so much about making sure people heard the full story, particularly when we were pitching it. As someone who thought they had a really good Holocaust education, what I knew immediately upon...

“Do you want to sit on me?” Joey King asks Taylor Zakhar Perez as he walks on set for their photo shoot. Well, it is called “Actors on Actors.” Zakhar Perez strikes a pose, and for the next 20 minutes, the “Kissing Booth” co-stars (who’ve since become best friends) pal around, pulling silly faces and contorting themselves into surprisingly sultry positions on top of and underneath the Victorian dinner-party set.
King and Zakhar Perez offer a window into their unique world as they sit down to discuss their latest roles — Emmy-nominated King portraying a young Jewish woman whose family is torn apart by the onset of World War II in the Hulu miniseries “We Were the Lucky Ones” and Zakhar Perez as the son of the U.S. president who finds love with a British prince, played by Nicholas Galitzine, in the rom-com “Red, White & Royal Blue” for Prime Video.

New York City’s Greenwich Hotel was abuzz Friday afternoon as women from all corners of Hollywood gathered to celebrate the ninth anniversary of the mentorship-focused Through Her Lens: The Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program.
Guests at the luncheon — including Jenny Slate, Katie Holmes, Rachel Weisz, Selma Blair and The Gilded Age‘s Louisa Jacobson — were dressed to impress in head-to-toe Chanel, with signature tweed jackets on display in addition to quilted purses and other accessories. The French luxury fashion brand partnered with Tribeca Film nearly a decade ago to launch Through Her Lens, which supports the work of female and non-binary independent filmmakers. Acclaimed directors including A.V. Rockwell (A Thousand and One) have emerged from the mentorship program.

As a kid, I adored my grandfather. I knew he loved chocolate (the dark kind) and hated ketchup. I knew he enjoyed a good pun and could speak seven languages — around the dinner table it was French. I knew his Steinway was his happy place, and that he made many of the things in his home by hand (like the curtains that hung in his living room, woven on a loom he built in his basement).
What I didn’t know about my grandfather was that he grew up one of five siblings in a town in central Poland called Radom; or that he was raised in the Jewish faith; or that he, his parents and his siblings were Holocaust survivors. These were truths I learned at 15, a year after he died, thanks to a high school English assignment and an interview with my grandmother Caroline.
The discovery sparked a lot of questions.

Daniel Fienberg The shift to a backloaded schedule built around a May 31 deadline for Emmy consideration has drained some of the surprise from the spring TV calendar. Viewers are growing accustomed to a glut of high-profile limited series and prestige returning shows from March to May, with the biggest titles and stars creating their own gravitational fields of self-perpetuating coverage.
Luckily, though, there’s still room for discovery. With its literary pedigree and a budget that burst off the screen in the form of astonishing evocations of 17th century Japan, FX’s Shogun had “prestige” written all over it. Yet the care taken by creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo to deliver this story without having it reek of appropriation and voyeurism was evident throughout. Still, who would have guessed that Shogun would be so successful that the network would want to push forward with future seasons beyond James Clavell’s novel,...

June 6, 2024, marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the Allied invasion of the beaches of Normandy, France. Code-named Operation Overlord, it marked the largest amphibious invasion in military history and resulted in the defeat of German Nazi forces at Reims.
Some films portray the soldiers who set foot on the shores of Normandy, portrayed by actors including John Wayne, Tom Hanks, Mark Hamill, Lee Marvin, Matt Damon, Vin Diesel, Tom Sizemore, Ted Danson, Paul Giamatti and more. Others focus on Winston Churchill, who made the call for Britain to join the invasion. Two Churchill biopics, starring Brian Cox and Gary Oldman, came out in 2017 and depict the strenuous decision the prime minister made.
For those looking for TV shows about the operation, Band of Brothers starring Scott Grimes, Damian Lewis, Ron Livingston is a must-watch. HBO’s miniseries about Easy Company also features Andrew Scott, James McAvoy, Colin Hanks, Simon Pegg,...

Although some of the most famous works about the Holocaust appear in other media — “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich,” for example, among books and Steven Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List” in films — television is the medium that has brought the horror of the Nazis’ murder of six million Jews to the most people around the world. The importance of shining a light on the evil plan behind the Holocaust may be even more crucial today, as the Nazi agenda of white supremacy has made an unfortunate return in these times, once again rising (and even flourishing) in countries around the world.
Even taking on a subject as horrifyingly specific as the Holocaust, television has responded by telling the story in many different ways — through epic miniseries, dramas about Jewish prisoners, adventures of both rescuers and rebels and even a look into the Nazi psyche itself (“Conspiracy”).

France has never had trouble getting people to fall in love with its many pleasures: the Eiffel Tower, the Palace of Versailles, the Louvre, and the island majesty of Mont Saint-Michel. It sells itself, which is probably why it is such a sought-after backdrop for television series.
But in the last year, France has been shown even more love than usual, as more than half a dozen shows, all vying for Emmy attention this season, explored the country through the ages. And no, this wasn’t some elaborate promotion for the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
From the 1600s to the modern day to a post-zombie apocalypse future, no cultural stone went unturned on TV this year, giving viewers even more reason to book their next (hopefully zombie-free) vacation.

There is a wealth of period costumes cross the categories for Emmy voters to think about this season.
In limited series, Oscar-winner Colleen Atwood built 200 to 300 leather jackets for AppleTV+’s World War II drama “Masters of the Air.” “It took six months to get them built,” Atwood says. Procuring the right elements was a global process that included getting era-specific zippers from Japan and sheepskin from Scotland and England.
Atwood also explained the unconventional aging process of the garments, saying that “once they were built, we had to shear the inside so they weren’t as thick, and then we put them in a vat of rocks inside a cement mixer to beat the leather up.”
“Shōgun” (now competing in drama series) costume designer Carlos Rosario built over 2,000 costumes for the 10-part show set in feudal Japan.

Since she began acting at 4, Joey King has been waiting for an opportunity to play a character that’s not only impactful but deeply personal. That dream was met with her depiction of Halina Kurc in We Were the Lucky Ones, a Holocaust survival drama based on the true story of a Jewish family determined to reunite after being separated during World War II.
When approached by director Thomas Kail about the role on the Hulu series, King said yes on the spot, before reading the script. “I had this feeling that this was going to be something I really wanted to be a part of, and I didn’t want to second-guess it,” explains the actress, who is Jewish. “I don’t know if I would consider it manifestation, but I really had hope for myself that I would be able to tell a story of this nature someday.

The line-up for the new series of Variety’s Actors On Actors has been revealed, with high profile movie performers interviewing each other.
Variety’s Actors On Actors is one of the most delightful series you can watch as a film fan. The central conceit is that two actors sit down for a natter about their work, often going off on tangents, acting as a unique insight into the industry.
Generally, the pairings are quite surprising, with the actors concerned often never having worked together and, in some cases, seeming quite random, but each one is fascinating and, usually, an absolute hoot. You can see Kate Winslet shooting the breeze with Gary Oldman, for example, or Beanie Feldstein with Florence Pugh – we are still waiting for Jason Statham to make an appearence.

IndieWire launched our “Pass the Remote” FYC TV screening series, produced in partnership with Disney, with a dynamic casting directors panel April 25, two Disney Storytellers panels April 29, and a panel about “Abbott Elementary” May 20.
Next up? A “Jim Henson Idea Man” panel on May 24 celebrating the documentary about the Muppets creator, which just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Like all events in the “Pass the Remote” screening series, it will take place at the Vidiots Foundation in Los Angeles’s Eagle Rock neighborhood.
Legendary director Ron Howard will be in attendance on the panel, as will composer David Fleming and editor Paul Crowder. Howard is a two-time Oscar winner. Each year, World War II stories continue to fill streaming libraries. Just last year, two prominent series in the genre were released: A Small Light, the story of a Dutch woman who helped Anne Frank's family, and Transatlantic, an uplifting tale of activists who evacuated refugees from occupied France. We Were the Lucky Ones stands alongside these projects – it's a heartbreaking story of ordinary people in war.
If you don't have time for TV shows, these five movies about love in wartime are just what you need.

For Henry Lloyd-Hughes, shooting the scenes of “We Were the Lucky Ones” that take place in a Soviet gulag in Siberia were taxing to shoot but in “the right way” due to how it was shot. “All of those scenes, by and large, were shot chronologically, which meant that there was an intensity to that period of work for me that was physically challenging and mentally grueling, but in a way that I think was right for what we were trying to get across,” he describes to Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). Those scenes also got a surprise boost from the weather in Romania in the form of an unexpected snowstorm. “They had set aside these cannons, like these hoses of snow to try and cover it to make it look like Siberia. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for We Were the Lucky Ones finale.] The power of love prevails in We Were the Lucky Ones. The series finale of the Hulu limited series, based on Georgia Hunter’s book of the same name, aired on May 2. After years of being separated during World War II, the Kurc family is finally reunited. Herta (Moran Rosenblatt), Genek (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), their son, and the Kurcs have a tearful reunion in the final episode. Rosenblatt tells TV Insider that the Kurc family’s reunion was “amazing” to film. “First of all, the setup was incredible. It was like hundreds of extras, all dressed or with a suitcase,” she says of the pivotal train station scene. The actress continues, “This scene was really heartbreaking, especially when I think about Genek and his father and Mila being reunited with her husband. I watched from the side, and I’m getting chills thinking about it now.” This is ...

Even with all the preparation that Joey King did for “We Were the Lucky Ones,” nothing could have prepared her for meeting the descendants of the Kurc family. Anna, the daughter of King’s character, showed up on set while filming was happening in Malaga, Spain. “It was this very emotional, beautiful moment. The first thing she said to me when she me, she outstretched her arms and she looked at me and she said, ‘Mama,’” she reveals to Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). The gesture brought tears to King’s eyes. “She had not met me yet, hasn’t seen any of the work I’ve done to portray her mother yet, yet is here giving me this warm embrace and confidence that says, ‘Yes, you are playing my mother and I’m so excited.’ It just felt like a real big green light for me.

[Editor’s note: This interview contains spoilers for the final episode of Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones.”]
It’s always darkest before the dawn, and that was certainly the case for “We Were the Lucky Ones,” the Hulu miniseries based on the true story of the Kurc family, Jews from Poland who managed to all survive WWII.
The final episode (the show concluded May 2) begins with Halina Kurc (Joey King) imprisoned in Germany. Successfully hiding in plain sight for years, she is eventually captured, and regularly beaten up in jail. All hope seems lost.
“[They were] some of the most intense scenes in the whole show [for] my character,” King told IndieWire. “It’s tough, it’s violent. It’s tough to watch, but it’s also really important. And I think where we landed with it was very helpful in showcasing how brutal it was without being gratuitous. [Showrunner Erica Lipez,] she never wanted to be gratuitous [about] violence towards women. I really love that point of view.

[The following contains spoilers from the finale of We Were The Lucky Ones.]
As the first minutes of Hulu’s We Were The Lucky Ones‘ finale begin, things seem dire for the Kurc family: Halina (Joey King) is facing interrogation upon being arrested by German police, Mila (Hadas Yaron) is struggling to reconnect with her daughter (Belle Swarc) after being forced to hide her in a monastery, and Addy (Logan Lerman) — stuck in Brazil — still can’t know whether his entire family is alive or dead. Spread out across multiple continents and featuring nearly a dozen main characters, showrunner Erica Lipez knew that finding her ending was a tall order.
“That episode was one of the biggest challenges I’ve ever had as a writer,” showrunner Erica Lipez tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We were deep into filming and I was writing [the finale], while we were seeing what these actors were doing. I was just like: I have to deliver this for everybody.
