YouTube has canceled “Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television” after two seasons, along with three of the streaming service’s other series, “Champaign Ill,” “Sideswiped,” and “Do You Want to See a Dead Body?”
The four shows were canceled because the tech giant is shifting its focus from scripted programming to unscripted, educational and music artist-focused “docu-follows,” as it begins developing projects for a new ad-supported, free tier in addition to its subscription option, YouTube Premium (which is ad-free and includes YouTube Music), an individual with knowledge of the decision tells TheWrap .
The company is preparing to announce the ad-supported option at its Brandcast event on May 2 and clearing its deck of several shows originally developed for YouTube Premium, before unveiling a new slate of originals designed for both platforms, the source says.

YouTube is clearing its deck, as the service gets ready to unveil its new original programming plans. As part of the spring cleaning of sorts, YouTube series “Champaign Ill,” “Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television,” “Sideswiped,” and “Do You Want to See a Dead Body” won’t be back.
Those shows join previously confirmed cancelled series “Overthinking with Kat & June,” “Youth & Consequences,” and “Origin.”
YouTube isn’t completely wiping down the mat, however. Breakout hit “Cobra Kai” is back for Season 2 on April 24, and “Step Up: High Water,” currently in its second season, continues to perform well for the service. Also, comedy “Liza on Demand,” starring Liza Koshy, and sci-fi drama “Impulse” are both in production for their sophomore releases.
Meanwhile, YouTube hasn’t yet revealed the fates of comedy “Wayne,” which premiered in January, and anthology series “Weird City,” which launched in February.

The percentage of women and minority directors of episodic TV shows hit record highs this year, continuing the TV industry’s recent trend towards diversification, according to a new Directors Guild report. In the 2017-18 season, women directed 25% of all episodic shows – up from 21% last year and nearly double their percentage from five years ago.
The percentage of minority directors also hit a new high, although their share of directing jobs grew at a slower pace than women’s. This year, they got 24% of all directing jobs, compared to 22% last year and 19% five years ago. African Americans directed 13%, the same as last year; Asian Americans directed 6%, up from 5%; and Latinos directed 5%, up from 4%. Men took the biggest hit – down from 79% last year to 75% this year. Native Americans weren’t mentioned in the report.

Anna Akana got her start with her now popular YouTube channel, but she is anything but a “YouTube star.” She has done stand-up comedy and has appeared in film and TV including Ant-Man, Corporate and Stitchers. She currently stars in the YouTube teen dramedy Youth & Consequences (which you can watch now) and has a ton of projects in the works.
She may be one of the biggest names in the YouTube universe, but whatever you do, don’t call her an “influencer” — she has strong opinions about that word. “I think it’s gross,” she laughed. She compares it to calling people cringe-worthy terms like YouTuber” or “Facebooker.”
In addition to digital landscape semantics, Akana stopped by Deadline’s New Hollywood Podcast a couple of months ago to talk about the road to her career as a first-generation Asian American. We touched on the misconception about being a “YouTube star,...

When YouTube’s Susanne Daniels first heard the pitch for “Cobra Kai,” she wasn’t thinking “game changer” for YouTube Red, the company’s subscription programming service. “Maybe I should have been,” she said. “But I was just thinking, ‘amazing, incredible pitch.’ The stars don’t always align in a pitch and you don’t get to check off all the boxes when you hear a pitch. But in this pitch, you just did. They just came in with everything that you could want.”
But “Cobra Kai” could indeed be the breakthrough for YouTube Red in what has already been a transformative year for the platform. YouTube Red launched in October 2015 as an ad-free service to watch YouTube videos, as well as a home for exclusive, premium content starring many of YouTube’s top creators and personalities, like Lily Singh, MatPat, DanTDM and PewDiePie (whom the company later distanced itself...

The lack of women in directorial roles continues to cause a stir in Hollywood, but online, a major content platform is ensuring its projects promote female representation. During an event at the Television Critics Association press tour on Saturday, YouTube global head of content Susanne Daniels informed attendees that 70% of the episodes for three upcoming YouTube Red shows will be directed by women.
The three projects Daniels referred to in her address were the action-thriller Impulse, the energetic dance project Step Up: High Water, and Youth & Consequences, which is the brainchild of YouTube star Anna Akana. “A priority for me is finding diverse new female voices and championing them,” Daniels said. “You have to make it a conscious effort to do it."

Logan Paul’s YouTube Originals projects are on “indefinite hold,” YouTube executives confirmed at the Television Critics Association press tour Saturday — but they would not say that the platform had cut ties with him permanently and did not rule out working with him in the future.
YouTube chief business officer Robert Kyncl and head of original programming Susanne Daniels told reporters that when incidents arise involving YouTube talent, what’s most important is to “protect the community” of YouTube creators, advertisers, and viewers.
“We believe [Paul] made unfortunate missteps,” Kyncl told reporters. “Actions should speak louder than words and Logan has the opportunity to prove that.”
After uploading a tone-deaf and offensive video shot in Japan’s “suicide forest” last month, Paul’s appearances in the upcoming new season of the YouTube Originals series “Foursome” and a sequel to the 2016 film “The Thinning” were canceled. Meanwhile, the YouTube star has taken...
