Leonardo DiCaprio has reaped an even dozen Oscar nominations for acting. His first bid was back in 1994 in Best Supporting Actor for “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.” After a gap of more than a decade (including being snubbed for “Titanic), he contended for Best Actor in 2005 for “The Aviator” and in 2007 for “Blood Diamond.” He then earned two nominations for Martin Scorsese‘s “The Wolf of Wall Street” in 2014 as both producer and star. Two years later, he won Best Actor for “The Revenant.” Most recently he competed in lead in 2020 for Quentin Tarantino‘s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Those five Best Actor nominations match the tallies of the likes of Robert De Niro, Tom Hanks, Al Pacino, Sean Penn, and James Stewart.

Hugh Grant has picked the hill he wants to die on: A “Notting Hill” Easter egg, to be exact.
The deadpan actor revealed during a Wired video alongside “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” co-stars Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez that he found the ending of 1999 rom-com “Notting Hill” to be “nauseating” due to a small detail director Roger Michell included.
“Notting Hill,” which has been considered by many a rom-com classic over the years, stars Julia Roberts as Anna Scott, a famous actress who falls for local British bookstore owner William Thacker (Grant) while filming on location. The final scene shows Anna cuddling with William on a park bench as he reads a novel, one that had a special meaning to late director Michell.
“In that nauseating moment on the bench at the end, I’m reading ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’ by Louis de Bernières, which was going to be his next film,...

Stephen Colbert skewered the names at the center of the weekend’s biggest news stories – Kanye West, Elon Musk and Donald Trump – by explaining what ties them all together.

“What is three people I would trap in a Porta-Potty and roll it downhill?” he said to cheers and applause from the audience.

Tucker Carlson is not the hated rival that you might think he is, Rachel Maddow has revealed, despite the fact that the top-rated Fox host is the central villain among the progressive crowd at MSNBC.
In a new Vanity Fair profile of Rachel Maddow, the MSNBC host spoke positively of her competitors over at Fox News, pointing particularly to Carlson, who is widely criticized for what the New York Times recently said “may be the most racist show in the history of cable news.”.
While there couldn’t be a harder ideological line between the two cable news hosts, Maddow said she focuses on tactics rather than politics from others in the field, including Carlson. Her relationship with him is, surprisingly, amiable, and she even noted that “it was really nice to see him” at a recent event.

The last film from the late director Roger Michell (Notting Hill [1999]), the simple tale of a man and an art heist entitled The Duke, is one of the most enchanting and heart-warming films of the year.
Michell’s film tells the story of 60-year-old taxi driver, Kempton Bunton (Jim Broadbent), who, in 1961 removed Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. Bunton then sent ransom notes demanding that the government put aside more money for the care of the elderly if the museum wanted the painting returned. The truth was far from the tall tales that Kempton told on a daily basis to any within earshot. The only certainty of the entire affair was that Kempton was a good man intent on keeping his marriage, and family intact.
As directed by Michell (whose additional work includes notable pieces such as Venus [2006] and My Cousin Rachel...

Roger Michell’s final feature film brings good-natured, Ealing-style brio to the 1961 theft of Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington
As with so many of cinema’s most successful practitioners, the South Africa-born British film-maker Roger Michell, who died last September aged 65, was not an “auteur” with a singular distinctive style. On the contrary, he was a versatile craftsman who could turn his hand to a range of genres with ease. From the classic Richard Curtis romcom Notting Hill to the American thriller Changing Lanes and the deliciously twisty Daphne du Maurier dark romance My Cousin Rachel, Michell instinctively understood the differing demands of each story he was telling. He adapted Hanif Kureishi’s The Buddha of Suburbia for TV with great success, gave Anne Reid her finest role in the taboo-breaking, Kureishi-scripted drama The Mother, and directed a sorely underrated screen adaptation of Ian McEwan’s Enduring Love,...

"To us teenagers, she was a babe!" Madman Films has released an official trailer for the documentary film Elizabeth, a biopic profile of the iconic Queen of England. This film is made by the acclaimed filmmaker Roger Michell, known for his many features over the years including Notting Hill, Changing Lanes, Venus, Morning Glory, Hyde Park on Hudson, Le Week-end, My Cousin Rachel. His latest is this - a documentary on the life of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-lived, longest reigning British monarch and longest serving female head of state in history. Why now? Who knows! "With extraordinary access to rare footage from the Royal Archives, Elizabeth is a cinematic celebration of an icon that reveals a unique glimpse of the woman behind the legend." It sounds like it won't be critical because it's more of a look at this woman and her life, not so much a commentary about...

It may be premiere week but NBC is already looking ahead to midseason.
The network has picked up The Endgame to series, with Morena Baccarin and Ryan Michelle Bathe set as the leads.
As for what the series is about, here's the logline:
A pulse-pounding, high-stakes thriller about Elena Federova (Baccarin), a very recently captured international arms dealer and brilliant criminal mastermind who even in captivity orchestrates a number of coordinated bank heists, and Val Turner (Bathe), the principled, relentless and socially outcast FBI agent who will stop at nothing to foil her ambitious plan.
Sounds interesting, right?
The cast also includes Kamal Angelo Bolden, Costa Ronin, Noah Bean, Jordan Johnson-Hinds, and Mark D. Espinoza.
Nick Wootton is set as the showrunner and will serve as an EP alongside The Fast and the Furious franchise veteran Justin Lin, who directed the pilot.

"What's he actually asking for?" "140,000 Pounds." "For what?" "Charity." "Good grief!" Sony Classics has debuted a follow-up official US trailer for the kooky British crime comedy film The Duke, the latest from filmmaker Roger Michell. This premiered at last year's Venice Film Festival and is opening in cinemas in the UK this September, then in the US later this fall. In 1961, Kempton Bunton, a 60 year old taxi driver, steals Goya's portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. This is the story of how, why, and who he was. It turns out he was just a bumbling British guy who didn't like paying for the BBC and wanted to come up with a scheme to make them change. In 1961, Kempton Bunton (Jim Broadbent), a 60-year old taxi driver, stole Goya?s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. It was the first (and remains the only) theft in the Gallery’s history. Kempton sent ransom notes saying that he would return the painting on condition that the government invested more in care for the elderly – he had long campaigned for pensioners to receive free television. What happened next became the stuff of legend. Only 50 years later did the full story emerge – Kempton had spun a web of lies. The only truth was that he was a good man, determined to change the world and save his marriage – how and why he used the Duke to achieve that is a wonderfully uplifting tale. Roger Michell, the son of a British diplomat, was born in South Africa and as a child lived in Beirut, Damascus and Prague.

Rachel Lindsay took issue with New York Magazine’s framing of an interview she gave that was published Monday, and she has aired her issues out on Instagram. Vulture, the brand that ran the piece, apologized in a statement.
“I worked with New York Magazine very closely on a cover feature where I was given the opportunity to tell my story and share my experience with the ‘Bachelor’ franchise,” she said in a statement posted to the photo-sharing app. “It was deeply personal but I felt it was important to share. While it was a very collaborative experience, they decided to misrepresent me with the headline that was chosen for the cover. Those are not my words nor are they are reflection of how I feel. Can you imagine anyone else playing Rachel Green besides Jennifer Aniston? Well, according to the Friends star, that was actually almost the case. The Just Go With It actress recently shared the surprising fact during an episode of the SiriusXM show, Gayle King in The House. Aniston revealed to host Gayle King when she auditioned for the role of Rachel that Friends director James Burrows warned her that the 1994 series she was already appearing in, Muddling Through, would get picked up for another season "just to spite this show." If the series did in fact, get picked up, it put her casting as Rachel in serious jeopardy. "Sure enough, they [the show] actually...

After so many years — and episode re-watches — could there Be anything left to learn about “Friends”?
As the highly-anticipated, almost two-hour reunion special for HBO Max shows (and with apologies to Matthew Perry for continuing to borrow his lines), “Yes, yes, a thousand times, yes.”
One thing that we didn’t need to learn (because we already knew it) was just how truly there these six characters were for the audience. In the 1990s and early-aughts, the cast of “Friends” provided hours of joy — first just on Thursday nights when new episodes aired, but soon enough five nights a week in syndication. Within the past decade, diehard and casual fans alike could spend any time of any day with Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Perry and David Schwimmer, as the show became available on streaming services. This sextet has helped their audience get through so much, now including the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tammy Loertscher in Personhood: Policing Pregnant Women In America
Did you know that in the US today, people who have every intention of keeping their pregnancies and raising their children can find themselves thrown into prison for perceived failures to behave the way a court thinks women should? Or that charges have been brought, in recent years, against women who have had miscarriages? Jo Ardinger’s new documentary, Personhood, looks at the political movement behind these laws, their implications for women’s rights more widely, and the impact they have had on individuals. It began, she says, almost by accident.
“ I'm an editor by trade. I really wanted to make my own film. And I learned about the foetal personhood movement and had never heard about it before. I learned about it from a news segment. I was watching Rachel Maddow and there was a personhood amendment in Mississippi, and...

Though more than deserving, Alfred Hitchcock never won an Academy Award for Best Director. But his first American film for uber-producer David O. Selznick, Rebecca, the first adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s bestselling, 1938 novel, won two Oscars, one for Best Cinematography, and the other, more importantly, for Best Picture in 1940. As the producer, Selznick picked up the Oscar and kept it at his home, but without Hitchcock and the Hitchcock Touch, Rebecca likely would have become a commercial success given the novel’s popularity, but maybe not an artistic or aesthetic one with a stellar and steadily growing reputation as one of...

“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again,” begins both Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 best-seller “Rebecca” and nearly every adaptation of the Gothic novel that has followed, including Alfred Hitchcock’s atmospheric 1940 best picture winner. With such a definitive version already on the books, why reboot “Rebecca”? Well, as the opening line itself suggests, one can and does return to the film’s tragi-romantic estate — shrouded in fog and mystery as it is — as often as one pleases. A fresh take may be foolhardy, but it’s not without interest, and “High Rise” director Ben Wheatley aims to entice those who may be visiting for the first time.
If Rebecca was the first Mrs. de Winter, and Joan Fontaine’s character was the second, what does that make the two wives in Wheatley’s latest update? The third and fourth? Or thirty-first and -second? No doubt, many out there...

Amazon has given a straight-to-series order to an adaptation of David Cronenberg film “Dead Ringers” with Rachel Weisz attached to star and executive produce, Variety has learned.
In the original film, which debuted in 1988, Jeremy Irons played twin gynecologists who both begin a relationship with the same woman. In the series version, Weisz will play the double lead role of the Mantle twins. They share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes — including pushing the boundaries on medical ethics — in an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring women’s healthcare to the forefront.

Daniel Walber's series on Production Design. Click on the images to see them in magnified detail.
Olivia de Havilland was in nine films that were nominated for the Oscar for Best Production Design. It’s not the record, but it’s quite something. I’ve covered three of them: Hold Back the Dawn, My Cousin Rachel and Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte. But none of those actually won the award, so I still have some work to do. I haven’t got time for Gone with the Wind, and The Adventures of Robin Hood can wait a few weeks until our 1938 celebration, so I dove into The Heiress.
I hope you’re ready to think deeply about embroidery.
Granted, I’m not entirely sure director William Wyler was thinking deeply about his protagonist’s favorite pastime. The emphasis on Catherine Sloper’s (de Havilland) stitching can feel like little more than shorthand for “spinster” status.

Actress and two-time Oscar winner Olivia de Havilland has died in Paris from natural causes at age 104. Ms. de Havilland was one of the last remaining symbols of Hollywood's Golden Age and the last living star of the 1939 classic "Gone With the Wind". Ms. De Havilland was a role model for women's rights in show business, having courageously stood up to studio bosses, beginning with Warner Brothers in the 1940s and extending to her recent legal action against the FX cable network for what she felt was an inaccurate and unfavorable portrayal of her in their TV movie "Feud: Bette and Joan", which depicted the antagonistic relationship between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. She won her first Best Actress Oscar for the 1946 film "To Each His Own". She also won for the 1949 production of "The Heiress". She was also nominated the prior year for "The Snake Pit". De Havilland and her sister,...

The British anthology series “Black Mirror” won Best TV Movie at the Emmys for the last three years: “San Junipero” in 2017, “USS Callister” in 2018, and “Bandersnatch” in 2019. The show is back in the 2020 awards race, but now it’s in brand new territory. The TV academy ruled that the series’s standalone episodes were too short to compete as movies. But will it be just as popular with voters as a drama series? Scroll down to see the show’s 28 entries across the Emmy ballots.
“Black Mirror” tells a different story in every episode, but with a common theme: the future of technology and its potentially sinister effects on humanity. The most recent season consisted of only three episodes: “Striking Vipers” about college friends reuniting later in life, “Smithereens” about a dramatic drive with a ride share driver, and “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too” about a teenager longing to connect...

Last year the TV academy forced FX’s “American Horror Story” to submit in the drama categories for the first time, since the “Apocalypse” season contained continuing storylines and characters from both “Murder House” and “Coven.” Because of the switcheroo, “Ahs” scream queen Jessica Lange was able to nab an Emmy nomination in Best Drama Guest Actress — a category she wouldn’t have been eligible for had the show stayed as a limited series. (Lange lost to Cherry Jones for “The Handmaid’s Tale.”) At this year’s Emmys, the exact same thing could happen to Andrew Scott for his one-and-done role on Netflix’s “Black Mirror.”
