Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Cr. Melinda Sue Gordon/Netflix © 2024 Eddie Murphy’s legendary character, Axel Foley makes a return, in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F to the delight of fans! This action comedy movie quickly soared to the top of Netflix’s list of English films attracting a 41 million views during its week. Love is also in the air on Netflix, as Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron’s romantic comedy A Family Affair charmed its way into the #2 spot. Meanwhile, Jessica Alba delivered heart-pounding action in the thriller Trigger Warning, securing the third spot on the list. But it wasn’t just about movies. This week's Pilot TV Podcast starts on a sombre note as Kay and Boyd help James come to terms with the cancellation of another one of his favourite shows, Prime Video's timey-wimey sci-fi Outer Range. And so, in honour of the show's passing — and completely unrelated to the time-sensitive recording of an upcoming spoiler special that may or may not involve Rapman and his brilliant Netflix show Supacell — the team took a step into their own time-traveling hole and recorded this week's episode all out of sequence. As you can imagine, chaos ensues!
Still, amidst the anarchy and all-out-of-orderness of things, James, Kay, and Boyd manage to discuss both the British and American elections, the third episode of House Of The Dragon, and this week's all-important listener question: which classic shows would've benefitted from more series/episodes, and which could've done with fewer? Elsewhere, over in the reviews section, we take on Apple TV's noir-inflected,...

Netflix is known as the biggest streaming service out there, with the largest number of subscribers and, of course, the largest number of original content. Whether you want movies, series, or animated series, regardless of the genre, Netflix is definitely going to have something for you to enjoy.
While the superhero genre has mostly been on the big screen, with Disney (MCU) and Warner (Dcu) being the biggest players on the market, superhero series are also present, but Disney and Amazon (with The Boys) are the biggest players in that aspect. Or, they have been, at least, until late June.
On June 27, 2024, Netflix released the superhero series Supacell, whose first season consists of six episodes. Focused on Black characters, the series has been praised by many and is slowly becoming a proper hit around the world after having taken the United Kingdom by storm. Netflix’s global chart is now prominently dominated by Supacell, a sci-fi that speculates on supernatural abilities, conspiracies and time traveling. If you enjoy TV shows that explore the possibility of making it through the course of time, fasten your seat belts!
Here are 6 time-travel series that are definitely worth your time if you loved Supacell (and they’re all available on Netflix).
Dark (2017 - 2020)
This already cultish show is, probably, what comes first in this respect. Indeed, this sci-fi masterpiece follows four families involved in a sophisticated time travel conspiracy that spans several generations. It’s truly one of the best original titles ever made by Netflix.
Outlander (2014 - …)
Next is another hyped series that exploits time traveling leitmotif from a somewhat different angle. It centers on a former World War II military nurse who is suddenly thrown back in time to 1743, where she faces challenges of a completely different era.

Netflix, the streaming giant known for its high production output, has struggled to maintain successful superhero series in recent years. However, the newly released “Supacell” may be poised to change this trend, boasting a perfect 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and strong audience engagement.
The streaming platform has a history of canceling superhero shows prematurely, often after just one or two seasons, despite positive reviews and dedicated fan bases. Notable casualties include “I Am Not Okay With This,” “Jupiter’s Legacy,” “Lockwood & Co.,” “Warrior Nun,” and “Raising Dion.” Even the successful “The Umbrella Academy” is set to conclude after its fourth season, with a planned spin-off already scrapped.
Netflix’s cancellation decisions are reportedly based on metrics such as total views and completion rates. The latter may be particularly crucial for superhero shows, which typically require larger budgets due to special effects. Competing with established superhero content on other platforms like...

FX’s “The Bear” served up more than 1.2 billion minutes watched during its first full week in release on Hulu while Eddie Murphy’s return to form in Netflix’s “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” grabbed a big crowd in its first 48 hours of release, according to Luminate’s streaming originals ratings for the week of June 28-July 4.
Other strong performers for the seven-day frame that ended with the Independence Day holiday included Netflix original film “Family Affair,” Amazon Prime Video’s documentary “I Am: Celine Dion” and Tubi slasher pic “Bloodline Killer.” Among streaming original series, Netflix’s “Worst Roommate Ever” got Season 2 off to a strong start and its British sci-fi import “Supacell” impressed in its first week.

The reports of the superhero genre's death have been greatly exaggerated. Make no mistake, the Marvel Cinematic Universe almost certainly won't be returning to the levels of popularity it reached with the Infinity Saga, and who knows what will come out of James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe reboot. Still, it's silly to act like superhero culture is dead and waiting to be buried, not least of all when "Deadpool & Wolverine" is tracking for a huge box office opening near the end of this month.
Hell, we're half-way into 2024 and we're still talking about the Snyder Cut, for goodness' sake.

Bridgerton is back on Netflix, folks, and it’s climbing up the charts faster than ever. The third season of the Shonda Rhimes series is part of Netflix’s elite Most Popular TV List (English) while sitting in the 10th spot. A Family Affair, a romcom starring Nicole Kidman, Joey King and Zac Efron, was the most-watched movie of the week on Netflix, beating debuts such as Jessica Alba’s Trigger Warning and Glen Powell’s Hit Man.
The film, which was directed by Richard Lagravenese, scored 26.8M views since its launch on June 28.
This put it above Trigger Warning’s debut of 25.7M views and Hit Man’s 10.8M views but it couldn’t match Jennifer Lopez’s Atlas, which opened with 28.2M views.
Trigger Warning grew, however, coming in second place with 26.3M views in its second week.
The big news in Netflix’s charts this week was Bridgerton, which saw its third season enter the streamer’s most popular TV list at number ten with 91.9M views to date.

“Bridgerton,” “Bridgerton,” “Bridgerton.” That’s what Netflix’s Top 10 Most Popular TV (English) list looks like now.
Season 3 of the Shondaland period drama has now entered the streamer’s all-time list at number 10, booting “Baby Reindeer” and joining “Bridgerton” Seasons 1 and 2 on the leaderboard.
“Bridgerton” is the only series with three seasons on Netflix’s top 10 all-time list. “Stranger Things” is well-represented with Seasons 3 and 4, but its first two seasons came out before Netflix began to share viewership statistics.
Like many of its biggest shows, Netflix split “Bridgerton” Season 3 into two parts. Part 1 debuted on May 16; Part 2 launched on June 13.
Netflix’s top 10 is based on number of views over a TV season or a film’s first 91 days of availability — both “Bridgerton” Season 3 halves still have plenty of time to rack up more views in pursuit of the preceding seasons. “Baby Reindeer” has just a few days left before Netflix’s self-imposed cutoff.

Season 3 of “Bridgerton” has officially joined the list of Netflix’s most popular titles of all time.
With a cumulative 91.9 million views since May 16 premiere, the season rank at No. 10 on the all time English-language TV chart, which Netflix measures based on views during each title’s first 91 days of streaming. This total was calculated on June 30, only 45 days after May 16, meaning the season can — and will — continue to climb higher.
Not only did “Bridgerton” Season 3 achieve all-time status quickly — it could have done so even quicker. Because the season was released in two segments, it wasn’t eligible for the Most Popular list until after June 13, when the final four episodes were released, at which point its viewership total was reset, as Netflix calculates views by dividing total stream time by runtime. But by June 9, the first four episodes had hit 88.9 views on their own, which at the time...

It’s been a busy weekend for Netflix’s viewers who couldn’t just leave aside the streaming giant’s new highly anticipated arrivals, and Netflix’s top 10 chart appears to be proof of this.
Apart from the Nicole Kidman-led romcom A Family Affair that is now sitting on the first place in the top of the most-watched movies, the platform also welcomed an intriguing sci-fi series that needed only 3 days since its release to start ruling over Netflix’s top shows surpassing the long-standing hit series Bridgerton.
Having arrived on Netflix on June 27, a superhero show Supacell is now holding a number one position in Netflix’s global top.
What Is Supacell About?
The series follows a group of people that have no real connection with each other except for the fact that they’re all Black, yet they simultaneously discover their superpowers somehow developed by sickle cell disease.

Andre in Netflix’s Supacell shows the heartbreaking image of a father who is desperate to care for and protect his son, Tj, but is unable to do so because of the tough hand he’d been dealt in life. Andre was just a regular guy, happily married with a son. But everything changed when he got sent to jail, and it wasn’t even his fault. Actually, one day he gave a ride to a friend who hid drugs in his car without Andre knowing. When the police found the stash, Andre took the fall while his friend walked free. Andre’s strong morals kept him from snitching on his friend, and he ended up in prison for a crime he didn’t even commit. Coming out of prison, he found his life had changed. His ex-wife had moved on with a wealthy man, and Andre lost custody of Tj.

In Rapman’s Supacell series, we came across a bunch of individuals whose parents or ancestors had a history of a real-life genetic disorder called sickle cell disease (Scd), also known as sickle cell anemia. The life-long illness genetically mutates the red blood cells (often known as the oxygen carriers) into sickle-shaped cells that can block the natural flow of blood. In such a case, the affected RBCs die a premature death due to Scd, which causes a shortage of oxygen in the human body that leads to chronic body pain, fatigue, infections, and, in some cases, stroke.

After a long time, I found a superhero series that felt worth watching—Supacell on Netflix. Each character, Michael, Sabrina, Rodney, Andre, and Tazer, goes through their own unique journey and overcomes life’s challenges, but they are all connected by one thing: they each have superpowers, thanks to something called the Supacell in their body. This Supacell comes from their family members who have sickle cells in their bodies, and it gives them these extraordinary abilities. None of these characters knew about their powers at first, but by the end, they unite to take on Ray, the notorious leader of a secret organization. Ray kidnaps people with powers, tortures them, and uses them for his own gain. Can they defeat Ray by being united? Let’s find out from this cast and character guide of the series Supacell.

So, I suppose it’s good news for all those who really liked Rapman’s Supacell, as the series is already trending on the Netflix Top Ten, which hints at the possibility that it might get renewed for a second season. However, there is no official confirmation from the streaming platform, and therefore, we might have to wait a little longer for the good news to come. But until then, there’s nothing keeping us from cooking up our own theories and speculating on what we can expect in the next season, right? Those who crammed the first season down know that it ended on a cliffhanger, setting the stage for a major faceoff between the two opposing forces in South London. So, what are these two rivals going to do next? Let’s explore.

Supacell on Netflix is a thrilling show about five Black people—Michael, Sabrina, Rodney, André, and Taze—whose lives suddenly collide when they discover they all have superpowers. But here’s the twist: they’re not the only ones with these abilities. There’s a shady guy named Ray who works for a secret organization that kidnaps people with superpowers. This group locks them up in cages, tortures them, and even kills those who try to escape, all to steal their powers for their own gain. Our five heroes have no clue about any of this. They’re just dealing with their own personal issues, completely unaware of their powers and each other’s existence. That is until Michael starts searching for the others. Why is he looking for them? What’s his goal? And will Ray catch them too and lock them up? You’ll find out all about...

Exclusive: Rapman utilized a superpower of his own — one that didn’t require him to don figure-hugging spandex tights and a cape — to survive the setbacks he encountered making the earthshaking new Netflix drama Supacell that began streaming Thursday.
“My superpower is discipline,” he declares.
Having an indomitable will comes in handy, too.
Rapman required his superpower to be at full throttle to help him wind his way through a thicket of obstacles.
For starters, he began the process in 2020, the year the pandemic hit everything. There were often heated and frank discussions over writers, special effects (the usual), and two composers came and went before he persuaded Netflix to let him chime with a third, Sillkey, the songwriter, producer and musician.
Having persuaded commissioners at Netflix to develop his idea of a drama about a group of regular people in south London who become mysteriously afflicted — because it’s like an illness — with superpowers,...

Warning: contains spoilers for the Supacell finale.
Supacell’s finale is action-packed, including the kind of big superpower smackdown we were promised from episode one. But among all that, there was a huge reveal that slipped by almost so quickly you might not have noticed – the reason for the show’s name.
The reveal comes when the super strength-wielding Andre is taken into custody by the mysterious organisation that has been monitoring Supacell’s powered individuals. As Eddie Marsan’s politely sinister official attempts to recruit Andre, he tells him, “At least one of your parents had sickle cell, or they both had the trait. And supacell is a mutation of sickle cell. It’s very rare, and even if you have it, it can lay dormant in your body forever. But it can also awaken, given the right conditions. Close proximity with another activated supacell is most common.”

Created by British rapper and director Rapman, Supacell is a new action thriller series on Netflix that comes with a rather unnatural premise. Set in South London, the series follows the lives of five ordinary individuals who suddenly realize that they possess some unique superpowers in them. In order to figure out the mystery behind these superpowers, the characters must unite and find some common trait among them, as the only apparent one is that they are all Black. Supacell is quite thrilling and makes for an exciting watch, mostly because we have not really seen something like this play out on Ott screens before.
Spoiler Alert
What is the Netflix series about?
Supacell begins with a short teaser of the wild action that is about to come in a scene that shows a woman desperately trying to escape some facility where she has been evidently kept hostage for a long time.

Supacell is a British superhero drama series created by Rapman. The Netflix series is getting love from all over the world, and it deserves that because it takes a lot of bold leaps and gives us a thrilling ride filled with complex characters and their interesting story. Supacell is set in South London and follows the story of a group of people who suddenly develop superpowers. The only thing that is similar to all of them is that they are all Black. Supacell stars Tosin Cole in the lead role, with Nadine Mills, Adelayo Adedayo, Josh Tedeku, Calvin Demba, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, and Giacomo Mancini starring in supporting roles. So, if you loved the mystery, thrill, and superhero elements in Supacell, here are some similar shows you could watch next.

In his new Netflix series, “Supacell,” creator Rapman examines the lives of five ordinary Black South Londoners who develop unexpected superpowers. Though the excitement of supernatural abilities and the magic of science fiction ripple across the show, the series also explores major themes that disproportionately affect Black people, including human trafficking, extreme surveillance, pervasive global anti-Blackness and predatory medical practices.
“Supacell” opens with a distressing event. An older Black woman is seen running down a dark corridor dressed only in a hospital gown. As she steps toward the sunlight, she is gunned down. Her limp body is then dragged back through the facility as prisoners — all Black people — look on in horror from glass cells. From there, the setting transitions into more familiar territory. Viewers find themselves on the modern streets of South London, where we meet Michael (a stellar Tosin Cole), a package delivery courier anxious about proposing to his long-term girlfriend,...

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to discover you had superpowers? Not the flashy kind that lets you fly or shoot lasers from your eyes, but abilities to help with everyday problems, like running really fast to get to work on time or lifting a stuck bus to rescue passengers inside. That’s the premise of Supacell, a new British drama now streaming on Netflix.
Created by talented filmmaker Rapman, Supacell is set in the vibrant neighborhoods of South London. We meet several characters going about their daily lives: Michael is a delivery driver juggling responsibilities; Sabrina works hard as a nurse; and Andre is an ex-con trying to do better. They don’t realize they have a connection until strange things start happening. Michael makes a startling discovery about his own newly emerging talents after a shocking accident.
As secrets unfold, we learn these powers are not isolated events.

Tosin Cole has already been part of two of the best-known sci-fi franchises around.
Sure, the American-born British actor admits his turn as starfighter pilot Lieutenant Bastian in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was perhaps a little “blink-and-you’ll miss it” (although it could have been a lot more — he got down to the final few auditioning for John Boyega’s role of Finn but “it just didn’t work out” and J.J. Abrams offered him this part instead). But in BBC cult series “Doctor Who,” however, across seasons 11 and 12, he played the main character of Ryan Sinclair, companion to Jodie Whittaker’s Time Lord. It all gives him some solid bragging rights.
“You know, I can tell my grandkids, ‘Your granddaddy was in this show!,’” he exclaims.
But now there’s another sci-fi that he hopes could also become something to tell the grandchildren about in years to come.

On the Pilot TV podcast this week we get the lowdown on Netflix’s South London superhero series Supacell from the show’s creator, Rapman, who dropped by for a chat with Empire's very own hero Alex Godfrey about bringing supes back down to Earth (literally) with his Black-led superpower saga [approx 23:30 - 46:15]. Due to embargo, our pod review of Supacell will drop on Pilot+ later this week. But, while we’re talking about things we couldn’t review for the pod this week, you can also look forward to a whole debacle about The Bear (a Bearbacle?) that plays out in the booth — so if you happened to be joining us to find out what Carmy and the gang have been up to in Season 3 of everybody's favourite restaurant-set drama, you may well be disappointed.

Back in early 2020, the British musician turned filmmaker Andrew Onwubolu — better known by his stage name Rapman — was readying for the release of his feature directorial debut “Blue Story” in the U.S. Based on his own experience living in South London, the musical crime drama tells the story of two friends from different neighborhoods who become embroiled in deadly gang wars. The film had already been a hit on home soil, making £4.7 million ($6 million) from a budget of £1.4 million ($1.8 million) the previous November, becoming the most successful British urban film of all time.
Sadly, like so many films due out in 2020, “Blue Story” was an early casualty of the Covid-19 pandemic. Paramount pulled its planned U.S. theatrical release and set it for digital months later. Another film Rapman was developing — “American Son,” Paramount’s remake of French hit “A Prophet” due to star Russell Crowe — also fell apart.

Going back to the immigrant/foundling who became Superman, the superhero genre has often been used as an exploration of what happens when people from variably disenfranchised groups find themselves with unexpected levels of power. Whether the result leads to enhanced altruism or diabolical megalomania is the difference between a hero and a villain.
Not all audiences are so eager to read for subtext, which has led to recent stories that push the subtext to the surface and the superpowers occasionally to the background, whether the goal is to make stubborn pre-existing audiences get the point (see X-Men ’97), to make an audience that probably never watched in the first place get the point (Amazon’s short-lived The Power) or to make a low-iq potato get the point (season four of The Boys)
It’s the genre storytelling equivalent of a bacon-wrapped date. I’ll leave it for you to decide,...

As far as the three young women sitting in row E at London’s Bush Theatre were concerned, the name of the character Tosin Cole was playing in Benedict Lombe’s “spicy” love story Shifters, wasn’t Dre — short for Dream — but “Dreamboat.”
It’s a double whammy of love, well, sort of, for Cole, who also stars in Rapman’s game-changing Netflix drama Supacell, playing a love-struck south London courier who discovers he has developed superpowers.

For any pop culture website that features a sizable amount of coverage of superhero-related properties, there is a legal obligation to use the phrase “Superhero fatigue” a minimum number of times a year. The earliest reference we’ve found to it was as far back as 2003, followed by a Tweet from 2009, a few months before the release of Iron Man 2, claiming that Disney’s deal with Marvel would have been better business four or five years previously, at the peak of the superhero craze.
But while at times it seems like someone must have been peering over Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s shoulders as they penned Action Comics Issue 1 saying “Hasn’t this idea been a bit overdone?”, the truth is that at both Marvel and DC, the superhero genre has seemed to be flagging of late.
So it seems like a bold move to choose now to release Supacell,...

"Just think about all the lives you could save!" "The only life I'm trying to save is yours..." So go save her! Netflix has revealed the main official trailer for a UK thriller series titled Supacell, arriving for streaming later this month. It's the next creation by the Blue Story director who goes under the moniker "Rapman", telling an urban London story about people with super powers. The series stars Tosin Cole as Michael, Nadine Mills as Sabrina, Eric Kofi Abrefa as Andre, Calvin Demba as Rodney, Josh Tedeku as Tazer, Adelayo Adedayo as Dionne, Rayxia Ojo as Sharleen, and Giacomo Mancini as Spud.

Netflix’s list of new releases for June 2024 look suspiciously like last month’s.
That’s because the biggest item on the schedule is Bridgerton season 3 once again. The final four episodes of Bridgerton‘s third season will premiere on June 13. Polin fans everywhere, rejoice! Other TV items of note this month include the third and final season of Sweet Tooth (June 6), Worst Roommate Ever season 2 (June 26), and That ’90s Show Part 2 (June 28).
Bridgerton aside, Netflix’s original movie options this month might be even more impressive than the TV slate. Richard Linklater’s Hitman, which stars Glen Powell as the titular assassin, premieres on June 7. That will be followed by documentary Black Barbie on June 19, the Jessica Alba-starring Trigger Warning on June 21, and romcom A Family Affair on June 28
Here’s everything else coming to Netflix this month. Note that Netflix marks its international offerings with that respective country’s two-letter country code.

Summer is no time for sadness, with new shows debuting throughout the season. With the official 2024 Emmys deadline now in the rearview, June is when the TV calendar resets, with new and returning shows now eligible for next year’s awards ceremony… but we’re getting ahead of ourselves.
June’s new TV lineup includes a handful of book adaptations, including Hulu’s “Queenie” starring Dionne Brown, Apple’s “Presumed Innocent” with Renate Reinsve and Jake Gyllenhaal as well as Eva Longoria-starrer “Land of Women,” and Prime Video’s “My Lady Jane,” based on the YA series The Lady Janies (and loosely on some Tudor history… very loosely). Shows like “Clipped” and “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” stem from books about real people and events, while on the reality front there’s also Peacock’s “Queer Planet” and a docuseries about the Dallas Cowboys’ Cheerleader squad on Netflix. Last month Eddie Marsan faced a happy dilemma: two high-profile projects in which he co-stars –Apple TV+ series “Franklin” led by Michael Douglas and Sam Taylor Johnson’s highly-anticipated Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” – were both being released on the same day, April 12, in Marsan’s native U.K. (“Back to Black came out in the U.S. on May 17).
The resulting publicity maelstrom was, Marsan says, “intense.” And yet despite that, the actor – who has starred in over 150 screen projects including “Ray Donovan,” “Deadpool 2” and Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes,” can truthfully claim to be “not really that famous.”
Partly that’s because his highest profile roles in the U.S. have seen the East London-born actor putting on an American accent, including in “Franklin,” in which he plays the second U.S. President, John Adams. Marsan has a long history with the character, having once been...

For his follow-up to Blue Story, Rapman is going big. The multi-talented creator announced himself as a filmmaker to watch with his hit debut feature film – earning sizeable box office and a raft of positive reviews, despite controversial cinema bans on his tale of childhood friends driven apart by gang violence. His latest project, Supacell, isn’t a film but a Netflix series – an original show about a group of South Londoners who develop superpowers, exploring how their lives are forever changed.
While the idea of ordinary people receiving extraordinary abilities is a familiar format, Rapman is bringing his own personal perspective to it – while drawing from what came before in beloved shows like Heroes and Misfits. “I loved Heroes,” he tells Empire. “It was the closest to my image of what I thought a show about superpowers should be like. It was a massive inspiration.” And while he’s bringing in genre elements,...

Supacell is a British superhero series heading to Netflix in June from Rapman, and here’s the trailer.
While America generally has the monopoly on superhero films, Britain has had its fair share of caped crusaders over the years.
The most recent example is Emma Moran’s Extraordinary, which is now available to watch on Itvx. From 2009 to 2013, Howard Overman achieved huge success with five series of irreverent comedy drama Misfits. Drew Pearce, who went on to co-write Iron Man 3 with Shane Black, began his career writing the little seen superhero sitcom No Heroics in 2008.
Perhaps the biggest shame, though, is that the film adaptation of clasic 1970s cartoon Bananaman, which was voiced by Bill Oddie, Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden, also known as The Goodies, never materialised, though a stage musical premiered at the Southwark Playhouse in 2017.

"You can save her..." "How?" "You need all four. One dies, she dies." Netflix has unveiled a first look teaser trailer for a thriller series titled Supacell, arriving for streaming this summer. It's the next creation by the Blue Story director who goes under the moniker "Rapman", an urban London story about people with super powers who have to join together. "Find them, before it's too late." When a regular group of ordinary people from South London are gifted with superpowers, they find their new abilities have made them targets for a powerful entity. There's only a little bit of footage in this first teaser, but enough to make me intrigued. Looks pretty cool.
