"Hot Rod" is one of those movies that really has come into its own since its original release. The movie served as the cinematic coming out party for The Lonely Island, aka Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer. Unfortunately, it was something of a flop when Paramount Pictures released it in the summer of 2007. But audiences have since allowed it to achieve cult status, embracing its many outlandish jokes, elaborate comedic set pieces, and hidden gags. The story of one of those hidden gags is, as it turns out, infinitely better than the gag itself.
On a recent two-part episode of "The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast," the gang broke down "Hot Rod" in great detail. It's the perfect example of why "SNL" fans should be listening to this podcast. On the episode, the gang explained how on Earth a poster for an obscure, real comedy called "The Whoopee Boys...

Two of the best pop culture fixtures of the aughts briefly collided behind the scenes, according to "The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast." In a recent episode of the endlessly delightful Lonely Island retrospective project, host Meyers and "Saturday Night Live" digital short mainstays Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone shared a surprising behind-the-scenes moment from Schaffer's cult favorite comedy "Hot Rod," and it featured none other than prolific "Deadwood" pottymouth Al Swearengen.
In case you haven't rewatched "Hot Rod" lately, it's worth noting that "Deadwood" star Ian McShane plays the bullying stepfather to stuntman Rod (Samberg), and his antagonism is one of the major driving forces of the surreal and silly movie. "Hot Rod" came out in 2007, but it filmed a year earlier, apparently before "Deadwood" had wrapped filming on its third and final season. Hollywood actress Isla Fisher is no stranger to comedy. She has been a part of a number of memorable films in the genre including Wedding Crashers, Confessions of a Shopaholic, and Hot Rod. You would think Fisher would have gotten used to the occasionally bizarre requirements of the genre and the lengths that actors will go to for a laugh.
But as it turns out, the actress was not prepared for one particular scene involving an elephant in the movie Isla Fisher made with her then-husband Sacha Baron Cohen, 2016’s The Brothers Grimsby. Cohen, of course, is known for pushing the boundaries of comedy like no other actor working today. Things got so intense that Fisher regretted bringing her parents on set to watch the scene being filmed.

The combo of director duo Radio Silence and star Andy Samberg is said to have piqued the interest of studios, with the battle commencing to sign up their untitled robot comedy project.
Here’s a story that caught our eye this morning, not least because it looks like it could have potential to offer a really fun time. Andy Samberg, the comedian and actor, is said to have teamed up with Radio Silence, the directorial duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, for an unnamed project that is being pitched to a number of studios as a ‘robot comedy’.
As well as featuring regularly on popular TV shows such as Saturday Night Live and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Samberg has added his comedic talents to plenty of films, not to mention doing lots of voice work too. As a leading man, he’s starred in some excellent comedies over the years, with...

It was announced all the way back in 2022 that Paramount was going to be remaking "Naked Gun" with Liam Neeson as the star. There was little movement on the project in terms of additional cast members or a projected release window throughout all of 2023, leading many to believe the film had been scrapped or entered a new circle of Hollywood production hell. While many view the "Naked Gun" films as sacred comedy texts that dare not be remade, it's happening, and there's a pretty incredible team behind it. The "Naked Gun" films famously changed the trajectory of star Leslie Nielsen's career, so perhaps the new film could do the same for the gruff, action antics of Neeson. We're still quite a ways away from the release of the film, so here's everything you need to know about the upcoming remake.

The Naked Gun, also known as Police Squad!, is an American crime spoof-comedy franchise. Having started in 1982 with the TV series Police Squad! aired on the ABC Network, the franchise includes one TV series and three movies, adapted from an original story written by the comedy filmmaking trio Jim Abrahams, and brothers David and Jerry Zucker.
The lead role of Detective Sergeant Franklin ‘Frank’ Drebin in The Naked Gun is played by the late actor Leslie Nielsen. Several other characters appear in the films. One of them is Detective Fred Nordberg, who is portrayed by O. J. Simpson. Recently, creator David Zucker revealed why he had Simpson play the role of Nordberg.

Did you forget that there's a reboot of the parody franchise "The Naked Gun" in the works at Paramount Pictures? Not only is the project still happening, but Paramount Pictures has announced an official release date for the comedy revamp: July 15, 2025. That means cameras should be rolling this year if they haven't already started production without us knowing.
"The Naked Gun" followed Leslie Nielsen as bumbling Los Angeles detective Frank Drebin as he encountered various plots of crime and intrigue, often getting into outlandish, slapstick situations. Based on the short-lived spoof series "The Police Squad!" that aired on ABC in 1982, the film series was infinitely more successful, resulting in two sequels that became solid box office hits. With all the nostalgia there is for rebooting previously successful titles, it was only a matter of time before Paramount circled back around to "The Naked Gun."

Where have all the comedies gone? Think about that and sing it to yourself to the tune of Paula Cole's "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" We used to be a proper country, inundated with the works of filmmakers like Judd Apatow, Adam McKay, and Paul Feig, starring big name talent like Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Melissa McCarthy, and Jason Segel, just to name a few of the actors who led big studio comedies that were hitting the big screen left and right. Sadly, times have changed, and it's hard to find a successor to "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," the next "Superbad" or "Bridesmaids," or even another "Forgetting Sarah Marshall."
This year alone, you'd be hard-pressed to find movies that are just straight up comedies. Sure, "Barbie" is incredibly funny, but it's not your average straight-up comedy. "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves...

Sketch comedy is inherently hit-or-miss. When you watch any given episode of the comic staple "Saturday Night Live," it's hard to imagine a single installment over its nearly 50-year run that is wall-to-wall perfection; some sketches and running gags and characters are just stronger than others. The same can be true for movies either inspired by famous sketches or created by sketch-comedy writers and performers. The latest example is the straight-to-Peacock feature film "Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain," in which the three guys of Please Don't Destroy, best known for their sketches on recent seasons of "SNL," team up to save their friendship and locate a multi-million-dollar treasure before anyone else does. Portions of this film are clever or funny (though not often to the level of laugh-out-loud hilarious), but even clocking in at 90 minutes, it wears out its welcome.

Like a Gen Z version of The Lonely Island but with a lot more smash-cuts and screaming, comedy trio Please Don’t Destroy — Martin Herlihy, John Higgins, and Ben Marshall — has made a name for themselves on the strength of the surreal and frequently self-deprecating digital shorts they contribute to “Saturday Night Live.” In “Plirts,” they pitched Austin Butler on the idea of wearing a shirt made out of plastic. In “Tommy,” the boys make the shocking discovery that their best friend is actually a 67-year-old Irish man (Brendan Gleeson). “We Got Her a Cat” is nominally about trying to surprise Zoë Kravitz with a new pet, but the real punchline is the reveal that Paul Dano has been living in the Please Don’t Destroy office while doing research for a movie about “three guys who suck.”

The comedy team known as Please Don't Destroy from recent seasons of "Saturday Night Live" have made quite a splash on the late night sketch comedy show. Acting as what is basically the newest equivalent of The Lonely Island, the trio comprised of Martin Herlihy, John Higgins, and Ben Marshall delivers hilarious pre-recorded sketches, and they're also part of the writing staff. Now, like many "SNL" cohorts before them, Please Don't Destroy is releasing their first movie, and the first trailer has arrived.

Get ready to meet your new favorite archaeologist hero, Rip Digman! Comedy Central has revealed the first-look trailer for the animated series "Digman!" which stars Andy Samberg in the lead role. What's more, this is the first animated series ever to be written and produced by Samberg, along with his co-creator and showrunner Neil Campbell ("Brooklyn Nine-Nine"). And rest assured, Samberg is just the tip of the iceberg as far as the cast goes.
The series is set in a world where archaeologists are massive celebrities and the coolest people on the planet. The A-list ensemble includes Clancy Brown ("Spongebob Squarepants"), Andy Daly ("Review"), Cole Escola ("Difficult People"), Harvey Guillen ("Harley Quinn"), Kirby Howell-Baptiste ("Queenpins"), Marc Evan Jackson ("The Good Place"), Rachel Kaly ("High Maintenance"), Kerri Kenney ("Reno 9-1-1"), Lauren Lapkus ("Jurassic World...

The original "Transformers" movie was about 20 years old before I finally got around to watching it, but it still took me by surprise. As a younger fan, high off of the 2007 movie directed by alleged pigeon killer Michael Bay, my first instinct was to dive right into the original animated series. The 1980s "Transformers" cartoon was immediately entrancing with its aesthetic, catchy theme song, and dated-yet-charming animation. After watching the series, the only natural step forward was to move on to the motion picture. A bigger movie budget meant better animation and a more ambitious story, which no doubt excited fans during its original theatrical run.
Then, the film's opening scene hits you like an Autobot truck. The cast of characters you've grown to love, such as the Autobots Ironhide, Ratchet, and Prowl, are immediately killed as Decepticons hijack their ship. Gone are the fights from the original cartoon that usually left both sides unscathed.

At the rate that adaptations of "A Christmas Carol" are made, there will likely come a time in every aging Hollywood actor's life when they're called upon to play Ebenezer Scrooge, whether in film or on TV. As a live show with a season that spans Halloween, Christmas, and Easter — among other holidays — "Saturday Night Live" is just as willing as Hollywood to go back to the "A Christmas Carol" well. In just the last decade, SNL has put out both 2013's "A Christmas Past" and 2017's "Scrudge." On the latest episode, co-host Martin Short, who has already graced our screens as Christmas icon Jack Frost in 2006's "The Santa Clause 3," summoned his holiday spirit again to helm the role of Scrooge for the sketch show's latest interpretation of Charles Dickens' classic novel.

When the now disbanded Zaz trio of David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker were on their spoof game, they belonged to a very exclusive club that, to this day, includes only Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner and Monty Python. Their parody run of "Kentucky Fried Movie," "Airplane!," "Top Secret!" and "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" remains unmatched. And while they were likely too talented to miss the mark in their heyday, it's difficult to imagine them drilling the bullseye so emphatically without the deadpan genius of Leslie Nielsen.
When Nielsen was cast as the unflappable Dr. Rumack in "Airplane!," he was best known for his stolid performances in films like "Forbidden Planet," "The Swamp Fox" and "The Poseidon Adventure." He provided instant, deathly serious gravity to every scene he entered. He was no one's idea of a comedic dynamo, which is why he was perfect for the part of Rumack.

Voice roles have evolved along with other acting styles over the years, and it’s been seen that more and more actors who are well-known for their live-action roles have taken on voice-acting as well in one project or another. The Transformers franchise has never really been known for the large number of highly-skilled voice talents that have given voice to some of their more recognizable characters, but the movies have made use of some very notable actors from the first animated movie onward. His fans were excited to see him make the jump to the silver screen, although the transition from television star to film star is not always smooth.
Samberg already had some experience starring in feature films, but they hadn't been extremely successful. His first film, 2007's "Hot Rod," was largely panned at the time, although it has managed to garner a bit of a cult following in recent years for its humor and surprisingly dangerous stunts.
Upon jumping fully into films after his "SNL" exit in 2012, Samberg was once again performing a bit inconsistently. "Celeste and Jesse Forever" was generally well-received,...

Although the feature film “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” was released on Disney+ and not in theaters, director Akiva Schaffer knows the importance of seeing a movie with an audience, as proven by the film’s tastemakers screening at the D23 conference and its L.A. world premiere.
“At home, it’s so easy to have a look at your phone,” he tells Variety. “You can miss half the things because they’re visual in the movie, but then again, as somebody who’s put out those movies and had nobody in the theaters, that’s not any good either.”
He’s referencing the poor box-office performance of his last feature, “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” (2016), which he directed and starred in along with the other two members of musical trio the Lonely Island: Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone. Since then, the film has garnered a cult following.

Chances are, if you're between the ages of twenty and forty, you've been a fan of The Lonely Island at some point in your life. Long time creative collaborators Andy Samberg, Jorm Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer have been working together since 2001 when they released their first comedic rap song, "Ka-Blamo." After years of making digital shorts online and eventually for Saturday Night Live, the team moved into directing and starring in feature films like "Hot Rod" (2007) and, most recently, the animated comedy "Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers" (2022). Throughout their entire career, the team has been guided by a single mantra...

Akvia Shaffer is best known for being one-third of the comedic rapping trio known as The Lonely Island, along with Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone. The three found fame as the creators of the "SNL Digital Short" on "Saturday Night Live," where they created such hits as "Lazy Sunday" and "D*** in a Box." Since then, they've also teamed up to make cult favorite films such as "Hot Rod" and "Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping." Needless to say, their work has never really been geared towards kids, which made it rather surprising that Schaffer took the helm of "Chip 'n Dale:...

With an outfit like The Lonely Island — that's director Akiva Schaffer and stars Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone, all childhood friends — behind "Hot Rod," the early aughts comedy is naturally filled with ad-libs and impromptu shifts in the storytelling. But one thing that never left the agenda was the need for professional stunt crew in a tale of a raggedy amateur stuntman.
Samberg stars in the film as Rod Kimble (a role originally written for Will Ferrell), who doesn't let his obscenely numerous stunt failures deter him from the most ambitious one of his career: jumping over 15 school buses on his puttering...

A staple of the 1990s Disney Afternoon lineup, the original Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers program ran for three seasons, in which Disney’s chipmunk duo got into a variety of crime-solving shenanigans. Formulaic but beloved by its pint-sized audience, it’s probably no surprise that Disney slated it for a streaming reboot.
But rather than a straight-to-series rehash, Disney enlisted writers Doug Mand and Dan Gregor, who cut their teeth on How I Met Your Mother and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and Lonely Island alum and director Akiva Schaffer to apparently do whatever they wanted, resulting in one of the funniest and strangest movies currently available on Disney +.
It takes less than two minutes for Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers to make the requisite Chippendales joke, and even less time to toss out a Thomas Chippendale reference, quickly establishing that this is something much more subversive and silly than the typical rehash.

Cassidy Freeman has only just given birth when she hops on the phone with Variety to talk about HBO’s “The Righteous Gemstones.” The actor, known for her roles on “Longmire” and “Smallville” before portraying Amber Gemstone, a televangelist housewife with killer aim and a fierce disposition, doesn’t know what these moms are complaining about.
“It’s really easy!… Said with a perfect amount of sarcasm,” Freeman quips.
Unbeknownst to the majority of her cast members on the megachurch-focused dark comedy “The Righteous Gemstones,” created by Southern native Danny McBride Freeman was pregnant during the majority of Season 2’s filming. “Well, no one knew minus my roommate and my bestie, Edi [Patterson],” Freeman says. Hot, mosquito-ridden days on-location in South Carolina, Covid-19 protocols, and some stunts here and there didn’t slow down Freeman, she adds.

“Palm Springs” from Neon premiered at Sundance on January 26, 2020 and was released on Hulu this past July 10. The film tells the story of Nyles (Andy Samberg) and Sarah (Cristin Milioti) as two wedding guests stuck in the same time loop. The pair develops a friendship as they adjust to their circular fate. This rom-com balances an absurd premise alongside quirky realism to create a wild and endearing film. Scroll down for our exclusive video interviews with top Oscar and Golden Globe contenders from the film.

Photo: 'The Lonely Island' Akiva Schaffer’s Hot Rod (2007) introduced a refreshing new style of comedy in a debut feature film from three powerful and talented young voices, The Lonely Island. The Pam Brady written coming-of-age sports comedy is full of slapstick comedy that’s Adam Sandler-esque, witty and memorable quotes that almost seem co-written with Tina Fey, and physical comedy that’s reminiscent of the great Jim Carrey. Even though these influences can be detected, their style is still distinguishably unique. The film follows self-proclaimed stuntman Rod Kimble as he, with the rest of his crew consisting of Jorma Taccone, Danny McBride, fellow SNL cast member Bill Hader, and Isla Fisher tries to raise enough money to get his step-dad a heart transplant so he can fight him fairly. There’s action, adventure, conflict, romance, and transcendent comedy, all executed with high quality; all the ingredients audiences generally love about movies.

Emmy-nominated actor Nicholas Braun, who plays the beloved character Cousin Greg on HBO’s “Succession,” is following in Kendall Roy’s footsteps by trying his hand at music.
Braun released a song called “Antibodies” earlier this week. Inspired to write the tune during the coronavirus lockdown, he crowd-sourced lyrics via Instagram, asking musicians to help with verses to the melodies he had stuck in his head.
After an overwhelming response, the music, lyrics and video (watch it above) came together. Variety caught up with Braun to talk “Antibodies” and whether he sees a musical future for Cousin Greg on the show, which won an Emmy for last year — and is nominated again — for outstanding original main title theme music.
Your May Instagram post had over 150,000 views, were you surprised at the reaction?
Totally! I was staying at my friend’s guest house in LA and I wasn’t posting a lot of stuff.

In Palm Springs, the new romantic comedy starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, things couldn’t be any better, but they certainly couldn’t get much worse. Have you ever been to a resort so idyllic that you never wanted to leave? Well, what if you couldn’t leave even if you tried?
First-time director Max Barbakow and screenwriter Andy Siara are probably feeling that same “this could be heaven or this could be hell” dichotomy; on the one hand, the coronavirus pandemic kept their Sundance hit, which broke the previous record for the highest sale from the film festival, from premiering on big screens where it belonged. However, if there’s a bright side it’s that the sheltered existence most people have been living since mid-March has added strange new weight to the film’s Groundhog’s Day concept.
Samberg plays Nyles, a shaggy nihilist caught in the midst of a time-loop.

With so many streaming services to choose from, it can often be difficult to find the right one to spend your hard-earned dough on. That being said, Hulu has remained among the most exciting and content-heavy platforms alongside Netflix, really cementing itself as one of the most appealing options out there in recent years thanks to its collection of original content and very, very deep library of licensed films.
Like every other streaming service, they bring us new titles every month and July is looking to be quite a good one. Especially if you’re a horror fan. Admittedly, Hulu has always been pretty reliable when it comes to this particular genre, and that’s a reputation they seem intent to keep, as next month will bring us the likes of The Devil’s Rejects, Freddy vs. Jason, Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, House of 1000 Corpses, The Ninth Gate, The House That Jack Built...

Max Barbakow’s time loop comedy “Palm Springs” became the buzziest movie of the 2020 Sundance Film Festival when it sold to Neon and Hulu in a deal reportedly worth $17.5 million, making it the most expensive festival deal in history by 69 cents. Word later got out that the two companies actually spent $22 million to purchase the Lonely Island-produced comedy. Why the massive deal? Moviegoers can see for themselves as Hulu has dropped the official trailer for “Palm Springs” ahead of the film’s streaming launch this July.

We’ve got a new Stuntmen React video from Corridor Crew for you to watch today. The guys brought in professional stuntman Eric Linden to watch and discuss the good and bad stunts of several films. Those films include Baby Driver, Batman v Superman, Hot Rod, The Lone Survivor, Point Break, and Django Unchained.
These guys point out a lot of interesting stuff regarding the stunts in these films that you may not have ever thought about or noticed before. I enjoy watching these videos as they offer some great insight on the stunt work that we see done in the movies.
