While his breakthrough film Chopper was a slow-burn success, it did bring Hollywood’s focus to Aussie star Eric Bana, who went on to join forces with several major auteurs in the following years. From leading Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down and later headlining Ang Lee’s Hulk, the actor soon cemented himself as a prominent force in the realm of showbiz.
Moreover, the actor has also been in the forefront when it comes to Bond fan castings and per reports, he was also one of the major frontrunners to replace Pierce Brosnan. Although there’s no way of knowing if these reports were true or not, even if he was offered the iconic gig, it’s pretty evident that the actor would’ve passed on it.

Australian actor Eric Bana had a fascinating professional trajectory. He first started out as a comedian in the comedy series Full Frontal before gaining momentum in his career with the Australian crime drama Chopper (2000). The audience loved his portrayal of criminal Mark “Chopper” Read, but his international breakthrough came with the 2003 movie Hulk, helmed by Ang Lee.

Eric Bana stars as the eponymous Chopper, Australia’s most notorious and celebrated criminal figure, in what’s been lauded as the “performance of a lifetime”. This brutally gripping true-crime feature received critical acclaim on its original release in 2000, and now Andrew Dominik’s directorial debut is available as a Limited Edition Blu-ray from Second Sight Films. It is also available in a Standard Blu-ray format.
Dominik’s (Blonde, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) shocking and darkly entertaining film takes us into the violent world of Australia’s most infamous figure – Mark ‘Chopper’ Read – who conquered Victoria’s brutal underworld single-handedly, in a film based on his memoirs.
Bana shows his acting chops in this seminal, career defining role of bonafide villain Chopper, and he brings the outrageous true story to the screen with maximum force. The brutality and nonchalance of the life and crimes of the one-man mafia,...

Eiichiro Oda has portrayed almost every feeling there is in his One Piece story. Be it fear, excitement, sadness, happiness, or anger, the One Piece storyline has covered it all. However, there is one feeling that Oda doesn’t want to draw in his magnum opus. And that is the feeling of romance.
Strawhat Pirates in One Piece
Oda has strict rules regarding romance in his manga and he may never change those. However, this doesn’t mean that he has not introduced the emotion of love in the series. Characters like Senor Pink, Sanji, Pudding, Hancock, and many more have expressed the feeling of love.
Even the doctor of the Straw Hat Pirates, Tony Tony Chopper was assumed by fans to have fallen in love when Oda released Chapter 900. When A fan asked Oda about Chopper’s love interest, and whether he would fall in love ever, Oda talked...

In January, Universal Orlando shared the first official “look” inside its highly anticipated new theme park, Universal Epic Universe, a development that the company expects to be a game changer.
On offer was a rendering of the park’s front gate and plaza — not exactly click bait for fans eagerly awaiting more news about the development. You can see that rendering at the bottom of this story.
Yesterday, however, NBC affiliate Wesh 2 in Orlando captured aerial footage of what it said was one of the rollercoasters already operating in the new park, which isn’t expected to open until 2025.
The helicopter footage shows a five-car coaster running along twisty black tracks. As they move through the turns the cars, which are blue, spin with g forces pull them this way and that.

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. Today we’re talking to Stephen Kelliher, co-founder and MD of established London-based sales and film finance outfit Bankside Films. The company played a key role in getting Australian horror hit Talk to Me off the ground and Kelliher walks us through how that project came together as well as Bankside’s hefty EFM slate this year.
Stephen Kelliher is in a good mood. The Bankside Films co-founder and managing director is coming off of the back of a banner 12 months with his London-based sales and film finance outfit, a company that not only repped worldwide sales on Irish-language Oscar nominee The Quiet Girl but also played an integral role in getting Aussie breakout supernatural horror hit Talk to Me off the ground.

One of the more fantastical elements of J.J. Abrams' 2009 film "Star Trek" is the use of a mysterious, seemingly magical substance called Red Matter.
In the 23rd century, Spock (Leonard Nimoy) used Red Matter to create a black hole in the Romulan star system just as its sun was about to go supernova. The idea was that the black hole would suck up the exploding star like a vacuum cleaner and save the Romulan homeworld. No, the actual astral physics don't many any sense, but this is what they went with.
Spock did suck up the supernova with his black hole, but he was too late to save Romulus. The black hole, it turns out, was also a portal through time, and Spock is sucked in and deposited about a century in the past. The Western has been on life support for decades. One of the most popular and bankable genres in the silent film era, it experienced a decline in the 1930s, only to come back and dominate once again in 1939 with films such as the John Wayne-starring "Stagecoach" and James Stewart-led "Destry Rides Again." It would remain popular for several decades after that, producing more stars of the genre, including Clint Eastwood, before fizzling out once again by the 1970s. Since then we've seen Westerns pop up sporadically here and there, with some, including 1992's "Unforgiven," and 2010's "True Grit," enjoying significant success. Even in the last decade, we've seen some outstanding modern takes on the Western. But on the whole, the genre just isn't what it once was.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at Crowded House's Fall At Your Feet, directed by Andrew Dominik. Andrew Dominik's newest film Blonde will be released this week on Netflix. It isn't the only film this year from the director of earlier masterpieces like Chopper, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Killing them Softly. Earlier this year the second film Andrew Dominik made with Nick Cave, This Much I Know To Be True was released in cinemas. Dominik met Cave in the eighties through his then-girlfriend, who was the most recent ex of Cave at the time. Cave even wrote a song about the woman in...

Director Andrew Dominik has a new film headed to select theaters, "Blonde," which will walk down the red carpet to Netflix a week from today to become the first Nc-17 streaming film ever released. "Blonde" has earned praise for its central Ana de Armas performance, but it's already proving as divisive as Dominik's last non-documentary film, "Killing Them Softly," starring Brad Pitt.
That movie came out ten years ago, while Dominik's filmography dates back even further to 2000 when he made his directorial debut with the Eric Bana-led "Chopper." There was a seven-year gap separating "Chopper" from Dominik's next effort, but his sophomore film was well worth the wait, and it happens to be commemorating its 15th anniversary today.

Venice film festival: Andrew Dominik’s controversial drama finds space for talking foetuses, presidential sex and a starry throuple – but denies its subject sufficient agency
Clocking in at nearly three hours, this phantasmal riff on the life of movie star Marilyn Monroe will do for people with bad backs what its inspiration, Joyce Carol Oates’ 738-page novel, did for fragile wrists. By turns ravishing, moving and intensely irritating, Blonde is, by the end, all a bit much – in every sense.
Writer-director Andrew Dominik (best known for macho yarns such as Chopper and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) has forged Monroe’s story into Wagnerian-scale opera, except there’s no singing – apart from the bit where Monroe (Ana de Armas) rasps out Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend. At least there’s a lush score by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis to take up the musical slack,...

The slightly political prison thriller “Escape From Pretoria” works best when onscreen action is focused on Daniel Radcliffe, playing real-life South African political prisoner Tim Jenkin, as he leads a crack team of white prisoners in breaking out of Pretoria Maximum Security Prison.
That’s not really a spoiler, since “Escape From Pretoria” is based on a real-life prison break that led to a decades-long international manhunt. Still, it’s hard to care about what happens to Jenkin and co-conspirators Stephen Lee and Denis Goldberg (Ian Hart), even if you do know how their story will end, and even though “Escape from Pretoria” does feature some well-paced and visually dynamic pre-breakout prep scenes.
Almost everything that’s enjoyable about “Escape From Pretoria” is a variation on stuff you’ve probably seen in superior prison movies, though Radcliffe’s haunted performance is exceptionally compelling. Jenkin and Lee’s politics never make...

Andrew Dominik seemed to be a filmmaker poised for big things in the ‘00s. After his breakout film “Chopper” at the beginning of the millennium, he followed it up with the acclaimed “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.” However, he stumbled with his follow-up “Killing Them Softly,” and things went a bit silent from the director. But Dominik is back and it looks like the next year is going to be a good one, with his “Blonde” currently in production and his two-episode run on “Mindhunter” earning great reviews.

Following the bleak, unforgiving path of recent Australian crime classics Animal Kingdom and Snowtown and Chopper, Outlaws (previously known as 1%) is a brash and brutal crime thriller about loyalty and revenge. Ryan Corr, who was put through hell in Wolf Creek 2, is plunged into another maelstrom here as would-be biker king Paddo. It’s no secret that while these fair British Isles basically invented acting and movie-making, another country out there has a particular knack of making some tremendously emotional and jarringly real films and TV shows… Australia I am looking directly at you!
For years now I have championed some of the titles that come out of Australia (especially on the indie scene) the wealth of talent in front of and behind the camera is incredible. Look no further than TV shows like Underbelly or Wentworth; movies like Two Hands, Babadook, Chopper, Wolf Creek, Ned Kelly or Animal Kingdom to name a few.
Now I get to add West of Sunshine to my list of Aussie movies that more than deserve your attention.
I am a sucker for a movie...

Eric Bana and Robert Connolly. (Photo: Rebecca Bana)
Eleven years since they first collaborated on Romulus, My Father, Eric Bana and Robert Connolly are teaming up again for The Dry, the feature film adaptation of Jane Harper’s bestselling novel.
Bana will play Aaron Falk, a federal cop who returns to his drought-ravaged hometown after an absence of 20 years to attend the funeral of his childhood friend Luke, whom the local police believe killed his wife and child before taking his own life.
Falk reluctantly agrees to investigate the crime to determine whether it was more than a murder-suicide, which opens an old wound — the death of teenager Ellie Deacon, who was a friend of Falk and Luke.
He begins to suspect these two crimes are connected but as he struggles to prove Luke’s innocence and his own he faces the community’s prejudice and pent-up rage.

The usual way a phone interview with an actor whose films have grossed over a billion dollars goes is like this: A publicist calls the journalist, then connects the star into the call. But for his phone interview with IndieWire, Eric Bana called himself, exactly two minutes before the scheduled time. “It’s the only way it works for me,” was his explanation, one which did not at all surprise his collaborators on the Bravo drama series “Dirty John.”
“It’s not that you would necessarily expect him to be this imperious famous person who just bosses everyone around,” showrunner Alexandra Cunningham said. “But he very much is just sort of like… he’s just a guy. For him it’s like, ‘Why wouldn’t I just call her? Why do I need somebody to connect me on a phone? I know how to use a phone.’ I don’t...

It seems like all anyone wants to talk about this week is Cannes, and the alleged hubbub Netflix has created by not releasing their films in French theatres. Their Bong Joon-ho–directed “Okja” was amongst the films that were booed during a screening and had to be stopped. Festival jury members—which this year include Will Smith—have been arguing about whether Netflix should be allowed nominations if it doesn’t release films in France. The rumour mill is also whirring about big upcoming projects and casting. Highlights include Daniel Radcliffe starring in the prison drama “Escape From Pretoria,” based on the life of Tim Jenkin and due to film in South Africa in early 2018. Tom Hardy is set to play a decorated U.S. Navy Seal in a new film from director Andrew Dominik (“Chopper”) and producer Ridley Scott. If there’s one thing we could use more of, it’s films by Andrew Dominik. The director took seven years between “Chopper” and “The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford,” another five until the underrated “Killing Them Softly,” and four more until last year’s gorgeous and shattering documentary, “One More Time With Feeling.” However, it looks like that trend of shorter gaps between movies could be continuing.

Today we’re launching a new video series of which we’re extremely proud: It’s “Movies That Inspire Me,” presented by FilmStruck. We’ve interviewed a host of great directors, all of whom have taken films to the Sundance Film Festival, about their favorite classic films streaming on FilmStruck from the Turner Classic Movies and Criterion Collection. And the conversations we’ve had are surprising as well as, yes, inspiring.
First up is Pablo Larraín. Currently the director of Oscar contenders “Jackie” and “Neruda,” he brought “No” to Sundance in 2012. His first inspiration is John Cassavetes’ “A Woman Under The Influence” (which you can watch on FilmStruck here.)
Upcoming is Larraín talking about the music of Krzysztof Kieslowski’s “Three Colors: Blue,” as well as appearances by Jody Hill (“The Foot Fist Way,” “Eastbound & Down”), who talks about his love for the Maysles’ Bros. “Gimme Shelter” and Roman Polanski...

When filmmaker Andrew Dominik heard that the 15-year-old son of Nick Cave had fallen off a cliff and died, he immediately phoned the Bad Seeds singer. They had known each other for decades, and Cave had co-written the score for the director's 2007 movie The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford – so he wanted to support his friend. The musician didn't pick up; a few days later, he texted that he would be giving him a ring. "I was terrified at the thought of receiving that phone call,...

If 20,000 Days on Earth is a film you watch to get high, then Once More with Feeling is very much a downer. That’s because it deals with the deeply painful loss Nick Cave experienced after the death of his son Arthur, and how this fuelled his latest album Skeleton Tree. But even if the two sides of Nick that we see in these documentaries are as different as night and day, that’s not to say that the Cave effect is any less mesmerizing in this latest black-and-white 3D documentary marvel. Having previously made gutsy, macho films like Chopper and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Dominik’s latest effort feels like a real change in flavor. The director is clearly yet...

Australian actors last appeared on screen together nearly 30 years ago in TV soap Neighbours.
Guy Pearce and Kylie Minogue have signed on to join Radha Mitchell in Flammable Children, the new comedy feature written and directed Stephan Elliott (The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert).
It marks the first time the two have appeared on screen together in nearly 30 years, having starred as Mike and Charlene in TV soap Neighbours in the 1980s.
As well as a successful pop career, Minogue has appeared in films including Moulin Rouge! and Holy Motors while Pearce is perhaps best known for roles in Memento, La Confidential and Iron Man 3.
Flammable Children will shoot in Australia this autumn. Three other leading roles are yet to be cast.
Taking place in 1975, the film is set in a sleepy beachside suburb where “an extraordinary event” sets in motion a revelatory week for a teenage boy and girl.

Abe Forsythe's black comedy Down Under is set to hit Australian cinemas on August 4.
Distributed by StudioCanal, the film is a black comedy set during the aftermath of the Cronulla riots.
As Forsythe's second feature, it is the story of two carloads of hotheads from both sides of the fight destined to collide..
Sincere, though misguided, intent gives way to farcical ineptitude as this hilarious yet poignant story of ignorance, fear and kebab-cravings unfolds, and what was meant to be a retaliation mission turns into something neither side could have imagined.
During the shoot, Forsythe told If the narrative mined comedy through the heavy drama.

Seann Williams Scott (aka Stifler from American Pie, aka Doug Glatt from Goon) is a cinephile. You might not’ve guessed that, considering his acting choices haven’t been, shall we say, high caliber. Nonetheless, he loves movies, so picking his top five choices is as difficult as picking your favorite food — depending on his mood, the order and selection changes. Recently, he revealed his favorite films with this stipulation, but even then, they seemed a bit out-of-the-ordinary for the Stifmeister. During a Reddit Ama on Wednesday, Scott was asked to name his top five favorite films. At the time, he said these were at the top of his head at the time of the question: 1. The Inheritance, directed by Per Fly 2. Talk to Her, directed by Pedro Almodóvar 3. Betty Blue, directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix 4. Open Hearts, Susanne Bier 5. Chopper, Andrew Dominik Who ...

This is a reprint of our review from the 2014 BFI London Festival. One of the most exciting movements in cinema in the last decade or two or so has come from Australia. Mostly (but not exclusively) tied to the production company Blue Tongue Films (which includes luminaries like Joel Edgerton, David Michod, and Spencer Susser), but also encompassing experienced figures like Andrew Dominik, Cate Shortland, Julia Leigh, Justin Kurzel, and John Hillcoat, the films are loosely tied together by the simple mark of quality, with great movies like "Animal Kingdom," "Snowtown Murders," "The Proposition" "Somersault," and "Chopper" emerging from the land down under since the dawn of the 21st century. Could the next name to join them be Julius Avery? The director won the Jury Prize at Cannes for his short "Jerrycan," and now makes his directorial debut with crime thriller "Son Of A Gun," which has managed to attract an.
