Sequels and spinoffs are all the rage on the big screen these days, but the news that Disney is moving forward with a Frozen 2 still comes as something of a surprise considering the studio has been reticent to pump out theatrically-released follow-ups to its biggest hits - only The Three Caballeros, The Rescuers Down Under, Fantasia 2000 and Winnie the Pooh are part of the Disney Animated Canon.
However, throughout the '90s and '00s Disney had a lucrative side-business in direct-to-video sequels that were turned around quickly and cheaply and made the studio a fast buck. Many execs felt that these cheapened the originals and John Lasseter put the brakes on them, although the recent Tinker Bell films (branching out from Peter Pan) have their roots in this release model.

This year's bumper showing proves we're living in a golden age for animation – though three of five nominees hark backwards with stop-motion techniques
Few would argue that we are currently living in a new golden age of animation, one fostered by the arrival of CGI more than a decade ago and now settling confidently into early-middle age. While Pixar, the San Francisco Bay Area-based trend-setter that landed in the mid-90s like a cluster bomb of energy and innovation, has dipped a little quality-wise since that remarkable four-year run in which Ratatouille, Wall-e, Up and Toy Story 3 all arrived in cinemas, its rivals have upped their games dramatically.
Competition for the 2013 Academy Award for best animated film must be the closest in the history of the prize, which was created in 2001 following the radical arrival of Pixar, Dreamworks Animation and others on the scene. Three out of the five...

It’s a reality…in the form of this art work by Deviant Artist Mirandaareli. The following photo reenvisions the characters of The Walking Dead in the guises of famous Disney characters. Disney continues its Blu-ray releases of the animated movies from their 1990s "Renaissance" with Pocahontas and its sequel, Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World, thrown in for fun. The three-disc collection features the two films on one Blu-ray and individually on two DVDs. Both are quality projects but look completely different in comparison to each other. Each received a nice facelift and restoration to make them look better than they ever have before.
Pocahontas shows us how the young Native American Princess meets Englishman John Smith. The two engage in a romantic relationship which brings to mind Romeo and Juliet. Her Indian tribe and his group of settlers clash over the land with tragic consequences.
This was the first Disney movie based on an actual historical figure. It does a great job of keeping true to the spirit of the actual incidences it's based on. That's not to say...

Chicago – Even Disney’s animated canon has a few films that aren’t going to get the marketing push or special edition treatment like “Finding Nemo” and “Cinderella” will get before the end of the year. And yet there are some hidden gems deep in the catalog of the most influential and important film studio of all time. The Mouse House just released seven films on five Blu-rays and I can guarantee you that at least one will meet the needs of your family when it’s time to turn on the electric babysitter. Pick your favorite.
It’s a tough call for this critic. I’d have to go with “The Aristocats,” the 20th Disney animated film and a pretty interesting time capsule given the way it bridges the gap from the more fantasy and literature-based animation of the first few chunks of the Disney archive and the creative...

Moviefone's Pick of the Week "Bernie" What's It About? Jack Black re-teams with "School of Rock" director Richard Linklater for a twisted dark comedy about the true story of Bernie Tiede, an eccentric Texas community leader who murdered the town's rich widow Marjorie Nugent (played by Shirley MacLaine). See It Because: Linklater has always been a great actor's director. In addition to a hilariously icy MacLaine and Matthew McConaughey (who plays a big-headed Da), the director populates the film with eccentric personalities, including real neighbors of the actual Tiede. But this is Black's movie: his disappearance into the unique and flamboyant Bernie reminds you that beneath his trademark schtick is a gifted comedic actor. (Also Available on Redbox DVD & Blu-ray | Amazon Instant Video) New on DVD & Blu-ray "Chimpanzee" What's It About? Disney's latest documentary chronicles the true story of Oscar, a young baby who was orphaned and left to fend for himself in the wild.

It’s a good time to be a Blu-ray and Disney buff. Of course, this has been true ever since Blu-ray became the format of choice, beating HD-DVD in the format wars from a few years ago. (Who doesn’t have fond memories of the format wars? Oh, sure, there were casualties, but we had fun, didn’t we? Of course, it’s not as memorable as the Rock ‘n’ Roller Cola Wars Billy Joel sang about it, but what is?) The last few months, in particular, have been fruitful for Disney fans who own Blu-ray players. In fact, it’s come to a point where such fans’ wallets are getting too light. If you haven’t reached this point yet, you may get there this week, because Disney is releasing six—count ‘em, six—films on the HD format: The Aristocats, Chimpanzee, Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp’s Adventure,...
